Hey I'm a little bit interested in getting some mics for my guitar...

What are the good ones? I hear the Shure SM57's are pretty popular..

yes,a 57 is probably the best mic you could get for a geetar.

They are dynamic mics so dont have as sensitive a diaphragm asa condenser mic meaning you can crank your amp right up and there will be hardly any break up from the mic.

another good mic is a MD421 (hope thats right) which has been discontinued unfortunatly

I would say a Shure SM57 is all you'd need.....

For the rest of your life :)

The SM57 is pretty much the industry standard.

O/T: There's a little Sennheiser built into the grill of my Guytron combo- very cool. Amp has an XLR out on the back so you never need to worry about a mic  Great mic.

How do you want to mic up the cabinet? (It is the cabinet you want to mic up and not an acoustic?)

If you want ambient room sound, then it's better to use a more sensitive diaphram mic, rather than the dynamic SM57. For close mic work, either the SM57, or 58 are ok, as are other dynamics, like the Sennheisser MD421/521 or the brilliant 441 (if you can get one still. They are also fantastic for acoustics). The E609 is another great mic that's worth a look.

The AKG414 is another good versatile mic that is worth a look.

My main mic is a Sennheiser e906. It's a bit more on the pricey side than the e606/609 but it's worth it. Sometimes I'll add a SM57 off axis for a different vibe for recording but for live sound the 906 is tops in my book.

I always found the 57s a little to bright on the top for my liking (though nothing a bit of tweaking and mike placement can't almost fix). To this day the one I miss most was a little gooseneck mounted AKG C416 accordion mike. So small, easy to mount on the front the front of the amp, and sounded really, really nice.

For a live situation with minor stage space e609, best. Sounds great.

i LOVE the audix D3 . very natural flat uncolored sound that gives the soundman the transparent sound coming out of your speaker.

also ...the new audix i5 is a very very good sounding guitar (&bass) mic. it kills on drums too !!!!
can't recomend them enough, and they are very reliable & inexpensive...

Not meaning to hijack the thread,

but when using a mic (like the SM57), would you plug it straight into the computer, or would you need some sort of mic-preamp ? if yes, what kind of preamp ?
