Found tonal bliss with my SR5 HH just recieved last week!:D Running through a 1001RBII/Neo212. With the bass and amp set flat it's pretty increadible right out of the gate! Finding different tonal options with pickup selection and right hand position. While I'm enjoying the experience of exploring I feel the need to cheat and ask for hints on what ya'll have found that make ya happy. Have found a lot reading the fourms, but specifically:

1. bridge pup only hasen't been a great sound yet, rather brittle and unwarm but without a great bite or bright punch to make me happy. How do I tune it that great stingray sound there?

2. pu position 4(?) coils 2&3 seems to be the tone winner for the most part with the eq flat. Do ya'll tweak eq when you change pup selection or find a pos and stay there all night?

3. Have the programmable sansamp that I tried with the SR5 briefly but am relativley happy straight into the amp. Anybody got some settings that work well with this combo when sending the signal to FOH?

4. The string tension seems a bit light for my liking. I use DR nickle lowriders w/ .130 low B on my 35" Spector and like the feel and tone. A possible good choice at resting time?

I'll get some pics up soon and glad to be a "Ball-man"!

1. I haven't really warmed up to position 1 yet either for the same reason, although I've found that it helps your FX come through more...if you use any FX. I'd also be curious to hear what some others are doing with position 1.

2. Position 4 sounds good to me for any slap stuff that I do...which isn't much, but I like position 3 for my main sound.

I generally run the eq flat on my SR5HH and my amp.

3. Lose the Sansamp, DI to board is all you'll ever need:D

4. That was my first impression also when getting my first Bongo, but after dicking around with tons of other strings I restrung with the standard and that's just home tone wise. And stiff? You aren't a geetar player are you:p Seriously, a week and you won't notive anything but the tone!

I've found the sansamp useful in tone correction when using my distortion pedal on a couple tunes, otherwise it just mucks up such a lovely Stingray tone! Got the bridge pup hummin sweet now, just a touch of bass boost and touch of treble cut both on the ray with a bit of contour dialed in on the GK. Makes the other p/u positions a bit flat but quick and easy to change with the onboard eq. I'm lovin this thing!

My SR5HH lives on position 2; treble flat, mids boosted about 5-10%, bass boosted about 40%.
Oddly, I like my SR4HH on position 4, with treble and mids flat, bass boosted 40%

I'm not one who goes flipping switches throughout the night. I find 'my' sound and just leave it there.

I always preferred "parallel" on both single H SR5s and Sterlings (never played an SR4 can you believe it). I played my SR5 this morning in church - was on parallel the whole time!

On a personal note, I used to use both the single channel and programmable BDDI, and I got rid of both. They completely killed the growl in my SR5 somehow. Going stright to the amp is the way to go.

OT- Why do people use the BDDI so much? I know they sound good, but seriously. The band I auditioned with ran on into a Groove Tubes tube pre into a power amp. They already had tubes, so why add a tube emulator? I see alot of guys using it with an SVT or some other tube head, and I just shake my head.

You mean THAT SR5 has another setting besides parallel:D?

THAT bass has one of the greatest tones EVER.

How was the reunion?

The only answer I have for you is to play with your band.

That is where you find out the good stuff and the SR5 brings some good stuff.

That is until you hear the bongo. IMHO

The idea is that you go from the BDDI to your (SVT) amp with the direct signal, and send the BDDI signal (shaped to sound similar like your onstage SVT) to the mixing console. That way, you won't have to deal with all the hassle involved in miking the bass cab and still can get a nice dirty tube driven tone to the FOH. If you don't intend to use it that way, then better don't use it.
BTW, IMO the SansAmp RBI together with a lightweight power amp is a very nice replacement for a real SVT. And you can send your direct and driven signal to the FOH directly from the preamp.

Position 4 used to win over 2, but lately I find position 2 has more of what I am looking for. So 1 and 2 are my favorite positions on the sr5 hh. Each requires a different EQ setting. I generally boost the bass a tad and the mids a tad and a half on position 2. 1 is flat ish, similiar boosts but less dramatic. Perhaps a little more bass.

Thanks for all the insight fellow ballmen! An increadibly versitle and powerful instrument I'm learning. Haven't worked with the Sansamp much yet, usually use the GK DI for PA send; but prob will try out some setting in case I need to go direct without my GK

I have switched to EBMM Hybrids from the Super slinkies. Fatter strings on A & E (85 & 105) and add single 130 for my SR5s. This will help with your tension, and I love the tone and punch.
