The Axis has a 10" radius fingerboard and the Steve Morse model a 12". How are they able to use the Gotoh Floyd for both guitars ? What is the radius of the Gotoh ? Do they shim the bridge to alter the radius ?

Jem,

There is no radius on Floyd Rose type trems. The "nut" has a specific radius, but not the trem.

The radius only comes from the individual "saddle heights" as you place them on the trem plate (which is level), giving a "round" setup as the tallest saddles go in the 3rd and 4th string positions, next the 2nd and 5th string, then the smallest 1st and 6th string.

That's why a Floyd Rose type trem can be implimented on any guitar.

And, it's fantastic to get your radius action absolutely "perfect", by using shims and different saddle sizes, which you can order I believe from MM, (at least the saddles can) shims can be made or bought from FR.

actually it does have a radius from the saddles which i believe is 10 at the nut and 14 at the bridge, if i am not mistaken.

As you said, it's the removable "saddles" that determine the radius of the trem.

However, "nut" is manufactured with a radius (to fit the fretboard radius), but the trem's simply get certain interchangeable saddles to match the fretboard.

Most saddles have a "code" number on the bottom (see), which determines the position on the trem plate.

That's why it's said (for example) that it is a 10" radius tremolo.:)

I have 3 Axis guitars and 2 Van Halen models and i've taken apart the bridges many times and there are no shims so I'm guessing that maybe theres diifferent saddle heights they use to yield a 10" on the Axis and 12" on the Luke/Morse. What about the nut though? If it's a fixed 10" how do they get away with it on the Luke/Morse ? or is it a different nut also ?

The Gotoh Floyd (like the Original) has a 10" radius at both nut and bridge... The sad answer is: either you shim it at both nut and bridge to achieve a different radius or live with the (small) difference in radius. I don't know which of the two paths MM has chosen.

The saddles on most good Floyds come in 3 different heights [ seen here ] and the nuts come in different widths ( example - R2 = 1-5/8" W and R4 = 1-11/16" W ). The nuts are generally 14" radius though.

I'm beginning to see where you're coming from with your question. Doesn't seem like it should work huh?
