Hello all.

I was thinking of buying a moses graphite neck raplacement, and having it fitted onto my stingray 4. I am doing so to try to get a more modulus type sound, but I just can't let go I my stingray I love it too much. Please give me your opinions on the matter.

Check out the neck: Electric Bass Necks - Moses, Inc.

Thanks! =)

i've heard more bad things about moses than good, mostly about their horrendous customer service and poor fretwork. if you want a graphite neck for the ray, i think that Status Graphite would be a better option.

don't take offense to this, but if you want your stingray to sound like a modulus than go get a modulus. a stingray won't sound like a flea bass. never. not even close.

rule nummer one,
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it
ruler nummer two,
when in doubt, ask yourself
"What would BP do"?
rule nummer three,
if still in doubt, see rules nummer one and two again

I have a Status Graphite neck on one of my Stingrays and I really rate it, so I personally would say go for a Status neck instead, I have not heard as good as reports for the others as I have for Status, they really are a class outfit. Good luck.

Status do indeed make fine replacement necks. No dead spots anywhere and still got the 'growl'.
Not a spot on my 30th though!!!:D

I would say keep the bass you love....definitely.
Chances are that the mods you are thinking of, wont achieve the sound that your after.
A good bass that inspires you, is a great thing.
You can always try and buy another bass.... this also rules out all the guesswork about "what it might sound like if..."

Many years ago, a friend of mine had a bright idea and had the pickup removed from his pre-eb stingray, and had 2 emg's ROUTED into the bass.
He absolutely hated it!....It didnt even last a week.... and cost plenty... and in the end, the bass was returned to original specs, but looked pretty bad.
That was over 20 years ago....funny thing is, he's still playing that bass now.
As was said before.....if it aint broke?

i played a NAMM 100th about 7 or so years ago with the status neck and 3 band EQ...if it were me, i wouldn't regret putting a status neck on anyone of my stingrays but I can always go back to the original neck if i desire since i'd be likely to keep the original neck around

Go to guitar center, play that that flea type bass with the composite neck and decide if that is what you want your stingray to sound like before you do anything that you may regret...just my opinion

A Flea bass and a Stingray sound very different IMO, it doesn't matter if the Ray has a graphite neck. Different pups, preamp, body and neck contour etc.

I'm sure the graphite neck does not make that much of a difference... no... I know it doesn't make that much of a difference!

It still will sound like a StingRay, but a bit more even over the fretboard, and more "precise" with very clear defined lows and even more sparkling highs. Maybe it can best be described as a "Surgeon" version of the StingRay. A SurgeRay.

that is what i was saying...a flea bass is very different sounding than a stingray...i've played stingrays with graphite necks and they still sound like a stingray to me...i don't like the sound a flea bass gives me but there people out there who do...besides i don't think flea records with the flea bass much anyways

the overall sound with a graphite neck on my Stingray is basically that of a stingray but you do get a more bell like chime when you hit off the strings when slapping and the harmonics are a little more metallic.

Tuning stability is exceptional, I have beat the living daylights out of my bass at a gig and it is still in tune at the end of it.

Status for graphite is the only way to go for a Ray in book. Good luck mate.

If it helps any I LOVE my ray. its fooking beautiful and the tone from it is emense.
I just bought a Flea bass expecting it to be a supped up 'ray but apart from loving every aspect of the build/feel etc, the tone is terrible. thinking about banging a status neck on my 'ray too. But ive been told it doesnt do much to the sound so thats all good.

If you want the flea sound get a flea. im not too impressed with it TBH but I cant put it down just cause how nice it is to play and how it feels. im sure with messing about with the eq and pedals ill get the 'ray sound I love, but at the moment i really dont have the time or effort to bother.

Gotta give the thumbs down on Moses. I sent him a G&L SB2 body for him to install one of his fretless necks. His craftsmenship was horrendious. He enlarged the holes on the body to fit his "mistakes" . The neck itself was great. Played nice and he installed the tuners and nut. I tried to swap the moses neck with another G&L six boldt and it was way off. Thats how I noticed fhe enlarged the body holes. I also sent him a set of TI flats to install. He misjudged and clipped one way too short.
