Okay. If you, dear reader, have been following my decision process re: rosewood vs. maple on the 25th Anniversary, you may recall that I was kind of on-the-fence about whether I wanted rosewood or maple. Here's what I've decided. I'm going to order up a 25th Anniversary with rosewood from Pete later this week.
But...I bought this one too.
Here's what it looks like through the eye of my cellphone.
I'll post more pics when I get a chance to use a better camera, because I can't do it justice. The quilt is gorgeous--like a lava flow, my friend James said.
So far, this guitar is the magic that everyone has been talking about. Add me to the chorus of people who are singing its praises. The chiminess of the tone is wonderful. It's even apparent when you play it without an amp, proving once again that a great measure of a guitar is how it sounds acoustically. This guitar just rings so loudly, and it sounds great doing it. James is a diehard rosewood fan, but he sure liked these maple boards. James said it best when he said something to the effect that this guitar does it all--both clean and dirty. The series/parallel switch is pure genius. This may be the best EBMM yet.
The purchase experience was sort of typical GC, but it was better than some other experiences I have had. I do have to admit, however, that each time I bought an EBMM from GC, it was a good experience. I have bashed GC in the past for the poor experiences that have turned me off, but things are getting better. I fully expected them not to have the right case on hand, but I know that from reading things here that GC is really working on that issue. It took three tries to get the right case today, but we did get it. The first case might have belonged to the standard black Luke that GCs seem to have, or it could have belonged to one of the Silhouettes. The second case was a G&G that belonged to one of the BFR Axes. The third time was the charm. Finally, they got the right case. James said it right when he said that GC hasn't always been the best place to buy an EBMM, but they ARE trying. So, props to GC and Christian May, who sold me the guitar. Things are definitely getting better for the knowledgeable EBMM buyer.
It was a pretty good purchase experience aside from the case issue. Christian went up his ladder and got us the two 25ths they had, both maple. One had trem. The other was the hardtail I bought. I asked to try the hardtail. Christian offered to get James the trem-equipped guitar. James and I agreed that we liked the hardtail better. I made an offer for it. Christian counter-offered $50 less than my offer. So, hey...how could I refuse? Actually, he even offered us a ridiculous deal if we bought both guitars, but James didn't bite. Shoot. He could have saved me some bucks that way. Christian was very helpful by not bugging me during the test drive. He probably left us alone for a good hour or so. Also, he made the effort to make sure that I got the appropriate case, never once showing me that I was trying his patience. I even got the box complete with the birth certificate. So, thanks Christian for making the effort and making this purchase a good experience.
I still can't decide between maple and rosewood. So, I'm going to take Pete's advice and get both. Pete, expect a call from me tomorrow or the next day. I know the window is closing.
Incidentally, if you're in the area, and you want a maple board and trem on a 25th, that other guitar is just loaded with birdseye. Just a gorgeous neck. I think I got a better top, though.
