gun stock oil and wax application

i just got a bottle of each

so ive never done it before
is there anything i should know
i could just follow the instructions
but i just want to ask you guys because you definitely know your stuff
any tips would be greatly appreciated

I do mine about twice a year. I usually take the neck off and sand the back of the neck with sandpaper, I start with 600 grit, move to 1000 grit and finish off with 1200 or 1500 if I can find it.

Use a couple of old rags. Use your finger and put a thin coat of oil on the neck, trying to keep it from getting on the fretboard. I let it sit for about a minute and use a clean rag and wipe the excess off. Once all the excess oil is off, I take another rag and apply the wax. I wait a couple of minutes with the wax and then again wipe away the excess and finish it off with a clean dry rag and buff it up.

Make sure you shake the wax up really good, it has a tendency to separate.

is it essential to sand the neck?
i just dont like the sound of doing that

on the bottle it says to leave the oil on for a few hours until it is completely dry
is that a bad idea?

It's not necessary to sand the neck, but you wouldn't believe the difference. Over the year, with changes in humidity the grain raise up making the neck a little rough. Sanding it with such fine grit sandpaper takes off only the tiniest amount of wood and makes it feel like glass. It won't hurt a thing.

Don't let it dry or you'll have yourself a varnished G!bs*n neck. Yuck! You only need to let it soak in for about a minute or 2 at the most. Wipe clean and apply the wax.

Oh yeah it might not have come across very clear, but I just use my finger, no rag for the oil, but do use a rag with the wax.

i most definitely do not want the neck to become varnished
my jp6 is the first guitar i have ever played that is unfinished
and i cant believe it
its so good

my wrist is a bit sore at the moment so i havent played for a week!!!
so i am just 'sprucing' up my guitar
so it is in mint condition for my return to it
which is very well anticipated
ill give it a go this weekend sometime

I once made the mistake of letting the oil dry and yes it sets like varnish. Had to use a lot of effort and acetone to get the crap off!!! A few minutes with the oil on is all you need!!!

Twice a year? Wow. I've had my EVH for almost 13 years now and have only lemon oiled it. No problems to report.

My 11 year old has had it re-done once, and my 10 year old Axis has had it done once. Thats with regular gigging too.
