Hi All:

How often do you rewax the neck with gun stock wax? I play my new BFR Luke about two hours per day and really like the neck to be very smooth. I have found that after about a week the wax has worn off. Is that normal?

Yes, I have been keeping the neck clean and reapplying the Birchwood Casey gun stock was about every one to two weeks and that keeps the neck very smooth. I was just wondering if anyone else was applying wax at those intervals.

Thanks,

Jim

One to two weeks is overkill. Some guys do it every 6 months. I do it every year or three.

A good rule of thumb is to do it when the neck starts feeling rough. The sanding & re-application will smooth out the neck and make it feel like new. But that often is just not necessary imo.

That does seem to be a bit excessive. I have had my Silo Special for about 4 years now, and have not done the treatment yet. I will probably do it at some point soon, but the neck still feels nice and smooth. Definitely a completely different color of the maple then when I first got her...but still feels great. But a good point that was already made is to wipe down the neck after every session.

I have had my Axis Super Sport since the summer of 1997 and I don't think I've ever done a wax treatment on the neck. It's been fine since then. Still plays awesome and smooth since day one. I just wipe it down occasionally.

Maybe once or twice a year for me, depending on whether I'm gigging a lot outside in the summer. In between, Wonder Wipes and occasional steel wool treatment.

Ive had my Axis Sport since 2004 (2002 production; dealer NOS) and my JP6 since 2007 and Ive never waxed the necks. I just run my polish cloth over the strings followed by the back of the neck and that suits me just fine. I like the neck to have that satiny feel but w/o the slickness.

Over time the maple seems to visibly age and get a little darker and the grain actually pops more especially my JP which has a ton of birdseye and even some small streaks of flame on the edges near the fingerboard.
