I wanted to find out if the gunstock oil recommended for our maple necks is the same as bees wax furniture polish ( made up of bees wax/Elm gum turpentine/linseed oil.I use this on past wolfgang guitar necks and it made them quite smooth and seemed fine for looking after the wood.As the FAQ section mentions using gun stock oil and lemon oil on fret board I tried to find out what that has in it,but no web pages came up.Does anyone know ?

I don't know exactly, but I can say that the Birchwood Casey Tru Oil absorbs into the wood surface and then hardens, so it's more than a wax or oil. I think Linseed Oil also does this, but I'm not sure about the rest of the ingredients. If you've used it safely before, it should be ok, but I prefer going with what the manufacturer uses and recommends.

I find that by using just the gunstock oil, you end up with the neck just like when it came from the factory.

I don't know what it is about the wax - but it just makes it look more shiny.

I've used 3 brand new necks on EB guitars - so speak with a little bit of experience.

Birchwood Casey is good stuff, I've used Linseed oil on gunstocks that are severely dried out - the stuff soaks in real well - then finished with a finishing wax like the BC, seems to hold to to years of bad weather / abuse, so I suppose our MM instruments would be fine with the BC treatment!

A friendly reminder not to let the oil stay on too long before wiping it off, or it turns to a sticky mess.

Good video by Drew - (man he looks good for a guy in his 50's - says Spud in a manly type of way)

Yes I'm surprised that he just used gunstock wax instead of oil too - maybe the Murphys gave it as much oil as it needed? Good video and I like his "mobile Guitar bench".

Anyway - just one thing- Drew says to use masking tape, which I always do as well.

However I bleeb he said (unless I heard him incorrectly) that you could use gaffa tape.
I personally would NEVER use gaffa tape on a painted surface.

And as Candid says - if you do use the oil, DO NOT leave it on, thinking that it will sink in better. Straight on - straight off, otherwise it will go all gloopy and you will have to sand the neck again.
