Man, just when I to get ready to buy an SR4, I got this mad craving for a 6 string, and this Yamaha RBXJM2 (John Myung Signature Bass) really got my attention. I really want to get the Stingray 4 , but I want the Yamaha RBXJM2 as well for playing Dream Theater stuff, I'am just stuck:confused: can any of you guys help me with my situation?

Thanks!;)

You should get the SR 4!!!!!
And if you HAVE to have a 6-string you should wait for the Bongo 6-string. It's right around the corner you know.:)

I play rockabilly, Green Day and Led Zeppelin with an SR4, so I don't see why you couldn't play Dream Theater, Frank Zappa or Perry Como with an SR4.

I have found video clips of John Myung playing a SR4.

Plus, the tone of the RBXJM2 doesn't really sit well with any genre other than the experimental rock that DT does.

IMHO

this is just my humble opinion, but i've found that 5/6string yamahas tend to have string spacing that is slightly wider than the basses i'm comfortable on. It seems to me that MM5s and G&L5s tend to have better string spacing, for my tastes. I've never found a 5/6 yamaha where the neck/string spacing feels right. That's all I got on that subject...other than WAIT FOR THE BONGO SIXER COMMING NEXT YEAR!

this is just me thinking out loud, but maybe the 6 string Bongo is for someone? John Petrucci may have convinced someone to defect.....?

To be honest, you are on a EBMM forum so we are gonna be slightly opinionated for the SR4 or any other bass made by EBMM.

So, I would get the EBMM! LOL.

I don't want to play a 5 or 6 string bass. I am still learning (having tons of fun) with the 4 banger.

will this be your main bass? if so, then get the sr4. if its not going to be your main bass, then get the yammy(or wait for the 6 string bongo).

I do slap a fiver but only for Korn's stuff that we cover and that is just slapping on the b and e strings so it's not much different than a 4 string bass, The technique for the Korn stuff is what was hard to learn with that.

I mentioned that very possibility when the Bongo 6 was first announced and was slapped down by BP. So, already been thunk, proposed, and squashed. :D

I don't play in cover bands so it is rather odd for me to grasp the concept when people say 'to play other bands music'.
Just how often do you need to play Dream Theater songs? What bass have you been playing those songs with now? Are you always going to be needing 6 strings? Is that what will keep you working?
I think the most important thing is to buy whatever bass you think you'll find your musical 'voice' on.

Just get a SR5 and you'll play 95% of that Dream Theather stuff, i'm pretty shure Myung recorded "Images and words" with a 4 strings Ray, or Spector.

Yeah I guess an SR4 will do, if I'm just going to buy a 6 string just to play Dream Theater stuff then its kind of pointless and a waste of money. Thanks to all of you that helped, you guys are great!:D

Oh and I'am currently playing an Ib*nez 5 string at the moment, but it has a really fat neck so it tends to hurt my fretting hand sometimes.
