Might work! Doesn't Floyd Rose do something similar themselves? I'm pretty sure there is one model designed to work on Gibsons without routing.
I had my hardtail 25th changed to a floyd. It was a pain for the luthier. The studs came very close to the pickup ring. He had to redrill and could intonate it just right. He is one of the best builders in Holland. Took him a lot of hours. On the Axis model it is more easy because the lack of the rings.
I love the change btw.
Keep in mind you also have to modify the neck for lock nut. So a lot of work to be done.
Eeerrrmmmmm, not really. There been production guitars with Floyds and no lock nut. The lock nut just improves tuning stability - by locking the strings in place, friction in the nut slots is irrelevant. (A neat idea in fact - who cares about zero friction? use infinite friction! - except for the extra hardware and hassle, which, IIRC, was a big part of why Lukather went to the vintage MM trem).
Wow, CryWolf, your luthier did a very nice job. Kudos to you for being so brave to take on a giant mod like this.
Yes that's right, my Axis does not have a locking nut, and with locking tuners it works flawless - I really like that I don't have to unlock the nut to be able to retune to Drop D.
Guthrie Govan's signature Charvel comes with a Floyd with no finetuners and just a regular nut as well.
A very nice job indeed!
That's the one! Without the locking nut the fine tuners are kind of redundant. The locking tuners do help.
