Hi guys

Is it possible to convert a hard tail guitar to take a Floyd rose?

And yes it is EBMM related....all will become clear :)

The top will most likely have to have the existing bridge mounting holes plugged and new holes drilled for the Floyd mounting and the you'll have to rout the body for the spring cavity etc. So, yes, big job, but it can be done by the right person with the right equipment and experience.

Might work! Doesn't Floyd Rose do something similar themselves? I'm pretty sure there is one model designed to work on Gibsons without routing.

I think Slash sometimes uses that on one of his Gibsons, thanks for the help chaps

I had my hardtail 25th changed to a floyd. It was a pain for the luthier. The studs came very close to the pickup ring. He had to redrill and could intonate it just right. He is one of the best builders in Holland. Took him a lot of hours. On the Axis model it is more easy because the lack of the rings.
I love the change btw.

Keep in mind you also have to modify the neck for lock nut. So a lot of work to be done.

Eeerrrmmmmm, not really. There been production guitars with Floyds and no lock nut. The lock nut just improves tuning stability - by locking the strings in place, friction in the nut slots is irrelevant. (A neat idea in fact - who cares about zero friction? use infinite friction! - except for the extra hardware and hassle, which, IIRC, was a big part of why Lukather went to the vintage MM trem).

Yes that's right, my Axis does not have a locking nut, and with locking tuners it works flawless - I really like that I don't have to unlock the nut to be able to retune to Drop D.

Guthrie Govan's signature Charvel comes with a Floyd with no finetuners and just a regular nut as well.

Wow, CryWolf, your luthier did a very nice job. Kudos to you for being so brave to take on a giant mod like this.

That's the one! Without the locking nut the fine tuners are kind of redundant. The locking tuners do help.
