I'm using Sony MDR-7506 - no complaints.
~ $90 Very comfortable. Good sound.
I'm sure you can do better but not for the price.

When I was an engineer, I only used Sennheiser. I still have a pair that must be 20 years old and still sound great, even though my aged hearing is on the decline.

id like to recommend the beyer dynamic dt 770

they are closed so they have an awesome bass response. also no noise comes out (or goes in) from them so you can use them at loud volumes in the living room.

they have a velour earpad so you can wear them for hours on end and not notice a thing.
i use glasses and tended to get a headache from the cans pressing on the rods. not so with these!

some say they are bass heavy, so if you intend to mix with them they might be a bit "biased" for that :)

ive also heard good things about shures latest cans. very good value for the money and this is in europe. they probably are even better value over there :)

I know sometimes they are a necessity, and we all know better, but please use extreme caution when practicing with headphones. It's so easy to play way too loud. My ears were grateful when I moved out of the apartment and was able to ditch the practice cans.

-we call them "cans", too.

DT 770 PROs. I have em, love em. You can feel the woofer shaking in your ear. GREAT for a 5 string

Beyer DT-770PRO-250 Studio Headphone | RMCAudioDirect.com

Take 20% off em & the are $160...

NOW THE KEY IS OHMS, either 80 OHMS or 250 OHMS. Dont make the mistake of getting the wrong one. IF your mixer, headphone amp of choice can push 250 OHMS get those, it cuts on noise\hiss big time but they won't be loud for Ipods & other low power output devices.

I would recommend the Beyer DT 770 pro's also.

Really good bass, good enough to mix with.

I've had mine for a couple of years, I'm rough on cans and they are not even showing signs of wear yet. Solidly built with metal not plastic.

Only con is they are not the most comfortable I've used, my Sennheiser hd280'S are much more comfortable.

Absolutely recommended +1 for Beyerdynamic DT 770 ... I use it at work and for making sound to other bands professionally! Also tried these at home for practice, ...excellent result for electric bass! Great in the mix bass cut through too!

Anyway, at home I use mostly my old AKG's K-100 (discontinued model), very nice tone and enough SPL handling! :)
