just purchased a bongo 5 - I'm quite thrilled!!! So I decided to join the forum. Got a real nice deal from a music shop too.

Mine is the carbon blue with the optional single neck coil pickup. Photos here.

I have one question. Suggestions for strings as backups??

Very nice. I almost got that same bass recently from GC, but I managed to control the GAS. My fretless has the SC/H set up with the added piezos.

As for strings, I'm currently using Sadowsky flats and rounds on my two Bongos. In the past, I've used TI Superalloys, TI Powerbass, TI Jazz Flats, D'Addario Slowounds, and a couple of others.

Basically, whatever strings you like now will probably sound good on the Bongo. :D

I'd like to get a warm, jazz-like sound out of it when I want it for certain songs. Nothing too bright and trebbly. which do you suggest? I've heard a number of opinions - DR's, Super Slinkys, the TI's...just want to make sure I get the right one.

I got it - it is used, but apparently barely - a quick return from someone (still has the tags on it) with a MM hard case for $800 shipped.

You think I did pretty well? will I be happy with it considering it doesn't have the dual humbuckers/piezos??

It should arrive tuesday. Can't wait. I sold my Rickenbacker 4003 to get it!

Congrats on your new bass! Really like the Carbon Blue.

Sounds like you're looking for the same sound I was looking for when I bought my Bongo. The Slinky's that were on it were bright, as were a set of DR Hi-Beams I was using on a different bass. Those were both stainless steel strings. Try some nickel wound strings to warm up your sound. I'm using Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds on the Bongo now (thanks Jason). They have lots of output and punch without the brightness of steels.

Enjoy that Bongo!

the bongo comes standard with slinky nickel strings not stainless...

Thanks for catching my mistake Pops. I'm surprised, since the tone is bright. Guess nickel rounds can be bright too.

Congrats on your new bass! I received mine on saturday. Right now to me it's hard to believe that something can sound better than a Bongo.
