The CMD121H + my Sterling sounds awesome. For gigs, I add the extension to get the full 500 W at 4 ohms. It really brings out the aggressive ballsy tone of the Sterling.

The CMD121H + Bongo also sounds great, but I tried the Bongo with a 15 inch Markbass cab and it sounded even better. I am thinking of getting a 15 inch cab for using it when I play my Bongo.

Point is...try a couple of different Markbass amps with your bass. Likely there is no right or wrong answer, but what sounds best to you.

I'm using an F1 head with a TecAmp S210 cab. For such a small cab it has massive low end that never gets woolly, even on the low B. I tried about 15 neo cabs of various makes until I got to TecAmp. Blew me away.

All of my Makbass cabs are 8 ohms so I can add a cab is necessary .
However , I wish by 4x10 was a 4ohm cab because I use it a lot by itself and it would be nice to have the amp running at full power.

My TecAmp S210 is 4ohms so I can't add another cab (they do the M212 which IMHO is the finest bass cab on earth - but a bit big for me).

My general rule is - if I need to get anywhere near half-way on the volume of the F1 at 4ohms then the bass should be DI into the PA as well. The stage volume should be as low as possible to let the FOH chaps do their magic on the overall mix.

(My other general rule is... if the power points in the club look in bad shape then I'm using the wireless and not being personally connected to anything!)

People are constantly baffled when I show up for a gig with my CMD 121P... they think I've brought a bedroom practice amp to a club! But it can get stupid loud and still sound great. And if I really want to damage the building I'm playing in I can hook up an 8ohm cab and tap all 500w. One of these days I'm going to see how it sounds sitting on top of a 4x10... but to retain the light weight portability I love I'll probably end up getting the Markbass NY 115. It does mean two trips from the car to the stage, but I find the MB amps sound more open and less "pinched" when you run them at full power.

Are you playing a 4 or a 5?

I play 5s exclusively. A Sterling and a fretless Stingray.

And yeah, while the CMD 121P does a respectable job of handling the low B, I have noticed that when I had the NY 151 hooked up to it at GC I was getting some really profound low notes on the B string. I know I know, a 15 doesn't necessarily add more low fundamentals... but damb, that combination of combo amp and extention cab sounded fine. Looked pretty sharp too. Saving my pennies....

I'm in Nashville this week giging and visiting several venues
for live bands, 80% of the bassplayers are using LM 800 tube
models and LM-3's with various cabinet brands.
My choice is LM800 tube and a CL108. When not using in-ear
monitors.
