Yeah Black....definitely black. The Stingray's (I think) look the best with that natural finish and the black pickguard. The Pearl blue and the Transparent Teal look nice too.

Awww...... I didn't even get a chance.... ;)
IMHO I think the Shell is the way to go, my SR5 is natural with rosewood board and Shell Pickgaurd and I think the Shell just adds that much more flare to the grain of the wood, your eye isn't sucked into the black abyss but rather drawn to the butterscotch veins of the ash and the velveteen chaos of the Tortoise Shell ...... :D I should be a campaign writer!!!
But hey, it's easy enough to swap around like your gonch right!?
Great looking bass BTW!!

cheers,
Peter

I really like the Black too! If you get tired of it there is a bunch of custom ones out there or take a plain one and have a custom job done.

Rod,

I'm liking that Tortise shell VERY much! My first Stingray was a '96 Natural and it came stock with a black guard stock. I changed it to a Tortise and loved it! Then...my band broke up and I made the worst decision in my life and traded the thing away.

Then I put the tort guard on my black '96 Ray that I still have and just recently went back to the original black guard on that only b/c the tort guard was falling apart.

Does anybody know who makes a really nice aftermarket PG? The one I owned previously had tortise on top of a regular white PC and it was just a thin plastic layer. When it began tearing away I stripped the tort part off...cleaned up the guard and now have a spare white guard. However, I want to put a tort back on my black Ray...or maybe a black pearl...now I'M indecisive!!!

Good Lord! I had an Ibanez EXACTLY like the one in your photo!

Really...this bass is getting VERY hard to find. I snagged this one from Bass Palace a few years ago. I love it! It's a 1983 Roadstar II and it's even hard to get specs on. I've been trying to figure out what the body's made of...I think Alder w/ birdseye Maple top but hardly anybody has these anymore. There's a guy from Australia, like Rod, who I know from the net that used to own one.

Rod...is your name really Gavin??? Also how many Ray's do both of you own?
