Hey everybody,

hope you are all well, i was just fitting sum new slinkys to my bass yesterday evening and decided to give the bridge a good ol' clean up and i was just wondering what difference the positioning of the bridge saddles makes, they are currently positioned in a steady gradient (shorter spacing on the E, i.e. spring more compressed...getting longer towards the G)...

Amd secondly, what is the routine for taking the neck off the bass, iv heard that you shudnt take strings off a bass as this causes bowing....shud i loosen the truss rod??i havnt a clue...

Im kinda ignorant to the whole technical side so any advice would be great thanks guys...

The bridge saddles set the intonation (forward/backward) and individual string height (up/down). Don't take the neck off and don't mess with the truss rod to change strings. If you are worried about neck bow, change the strings one at a time.

hey brad
- it's been said that
if you know the difference
between good & bad advice,
then you don't need advice

- from my experience as a beginner, it pay$ to park the ego for a couple of hours, put on a humble attitude, and pay a really good bass tech to do a proper 'tuneup' on a good bass
- with the right approach (hint: a good and respected bass teacher's referral and guidance can help) a really good bass tech will teach you what you need to know, just before you need to know it

Check out www.garywillis.com. He has a 'do it yourself' guide for setting up bass guitar, (written for his signature Ibanez, but most of the info is universal), including lengthening/shortening of bridge saddles.

He also discusses bowing, height of saddles, trussrods, etc.

Fairly simple and straightforward. After 16 years of playing, I finally can take an allen wrench to my bass with some degree of confidence, thanks to his site.

I totally agree!

Rayan, I would love to meet you in person sometimes. If you don't already write detective novels "wherever you are", maybe you should consider that as a career.
