Hey guys,

I wanted to get some advice from you guys. I have an older guitar with two autographs on the back. I want to preserve the autographs somehow. The guitar is an oil based finish, in other words, bare wood with the autographs on them. What could I use to do this?

I have some Behlen Master "Jet Spray" Lacquer Finish - B101-0803 Jet Spray Sanding Sealer from another project. Would this work? Thanks for the help guys.

Dan,

They would work just fine. I have an old Epiphone from the early 90's that became a project guitar and I changed the name on the headstock to my own "brand" and i sprayed it with laquer and it worked great.

I would be very cautious. If the wood is oiled, any coating is going to lift. Something like a bare wood EBMM that's had the gunstock oil/wax would not be a sure thing to be coating. Be very careful here!

you have to use something that filters out uv light.........or the sharpie WILL fade out over a LONG period of time.it takes quite a few years .......but it does eventually happen. i've seen this happen quite a few times.

There are a few threads like this floating around somewhere on the board. I think the best answer so far has been clear contact paper. It offers great protection and isn't permanant. If you can cut it perfectly to size, it's really something...you can't even tell it's there.

If the sigs. are small and you don't mind seeing a "seam" a very quick and cheap solution is to go to walmart of fye or something and buy a pack of those static cling ipod screen protectors (essentially contact paper anyway).

The sigs are on the back of this guitar. Moderator, if this is inappropriate because of the brand difference, I apologize. Feel free to remove the link if that is better. It's bare wood. I have contact paper on the back now, but they are starting to bubble up. I thought about removing them and adding lacquer. To be honest, this sigs aren't really a huge deal to me. I barely play this guitar, thanks to my balls, and just wanted to permanently cover the autographs with lacquer and stick it into storage for another 20 years.
