I want to buy a MM Bass. I currently play a PBass (1977 which I bought new). I don't know enough about MM guitars to select the best instrument for my interests. My playing leans to Blues and Jazz. I have read some of the posts and you all are very knowledgeable with regard to these exquisite instruments. Can you reply with some models with features that match my playing interests. Price is always an issue ( I teach high school) but my first need is to understand which models best complement the musical styles I play. Thanks.

Well that is a good question. MM models are pretty different. I might be wrong but in your case I'd look first of all for Stingray as "old school" model (maybe even Classic Stingray) or Reflex and Big Al cuz those two may be switched to passive mode. But let's see what the Elders will say :)

And did you look at this page? - http://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses.html

There is plenty of information that may really help with the instrument selection.

The precision is a fellow mellow sounding bass compared to a stingray. I know the stingray does a lot of things but from personal experience it doesn't have the roundness and mellowness that a precision has. Two completely different beasts.
Not sure how the two pickup basses compare though, guessing the front pickup sounds a bit more precision like than the bridge.
As far as playability goes, there not too far apart. Similar size and profile neck, body of stingray is slightly smaller and more comfortable I think. The sabre might be worth a try too, has very good switching options.

I don't rate the piezo's that much, good in theory but never used it much on my stingray because it was a bit too harsh sounding

I've been playing Precisions for a few years, and have three of them. A year ago I had a chance to buy a '99 SR5 for a good price and it turned out to be a keeper. I love the neck, which has a similar feel to the P (although the string spacing is a little narrower). It's a little heavy, but at 72 I sit down to play, so that's not really a problem. The sound is more aggressive than the P, but that's OK since I use it on material that suits it. It's very nicely finished and I get compliments on its looks.

I understand that the Sterling is a bit lighter, but I'm happy with the StingRay.
