Help with Robbie Shakespeare tone on Bongo

When Robbie Shakespeare played with Dylan in the 80's (Infidels album for example) I fell in love with that tone

I'm trying to mimic it on the Bongo and could use some pointers.

It maybe a long shot but I'm sure a fellow Bongoloid/head has the info inquiring minds want to know
