Hi and welcome to this fine place !
Now what's a SUB1 like...

I would consider it to be the most open sounding guitar in it's price class ever - probably due to the selected woods for the body (like a Steve Morse model).
With the included MM custom humbuckers I'd say you might be able to get near the sound of a Paula, but with much more definition and as already said - a much more open sound than the Paul and far beyond anything Epiphone ever will deliver.
I do have one besides others and would definitely buy another one - chance given I find one now they are out of production for a time...

They feature poplar body, maple neck, locking tuners and other high-grade hardware, great pickups, ... way too much for the money, which is probably why they were discontinued.

Go for it, man - if you were into Epiphones 'til now...
...well, I think you'll never want to play an Epi again after you first played the SUB. Let's say if adjusted properly, it almost plays for itself. :D

DO IT if you can get one !

The SUB1 is a great deal for the $. Especially now in the US they are priced to move!

The guitar sounds great, and it is rather versatile with the 2 HH pickups. It looks pretty cool too. The drawback is that it isn't nearly as comfortable as the Silhouette Guitar. A little more contouring would have made it a great guitar rather than a good one.

I don't even like to use "for the price" when I describe it... it's just a great guitar, at any price. I can get a pretty damn mean sound from my bridge pickup, and the neck pickup is awesome, I couldn't live without it. This thing is going to send that Epi running for the hills. Just get it and be prepared for an addiction ;)

I have a Sub1 for over a month now. I'll give you a list of what i like and don't like:

+ The neck! There is really no better!
+ The headstock design (i like it)
+ The fact that its a "Strat" kind of guitar, but no one has it ;)
+ Its really well build

- The body is not contoured which makes it less confortable to play on
- The guitar is not shielded! (Which is pathetic IMO for the price i paid)
- Alot of people that heard my sub1 thought it was made of plastic  This is probably because of the poplar body which doesnt give much characteristics to the sound.

I'd say it totally depends on the price your gonna pay for the Sub1. The Epiphone Les Paul is a very well build instrument. What are you expecting to get extra/better when you would have a Sub1?

^ It sounds bad because of that Squier amp bro ;) I took that same amp to college with me. It crapped out on me, surprise surprise. Poplar is a good wood, its just neutral

Also, I'm pretty sure it's shielded, or at least should be

Haven't played a Sub yet ... but just wanted to point out that the Morse and Y2D are both made of poplar and don't have a body contour. They're my favourite guitars. So it's really a preference.

Sorry for chiming in here again, but I don't agree with some of the above mentioned "negative" points.

As Sub1Zero said, the poplar sounds just neutral to the strings and gives it a very resonant and loud sound even when played dry off the amp.
It's attached to a good (rather tube) amp that this guitar starts shining: Rock and even metal tunes, fast action and a sustain to die for. That's about it.
Just keep in mind that Steve Morse selected poplar as the body wood for his EBMM signatur guitars. I would wonder why if ever that wood did sound like plastic...

For the contour of the body: OK.
This is where the word "budget" comes into play. You cannot expect a full out EBMM Silhouette-equivalent at such an attractive price. Nevertheless the SUB1 is really lightweight, all edges are comfortably rounded and even the highest frets are easily accessible even to smaller hands.

I think comparing the SUB1 to an Epiphone Les Paul does not do both guitars justice. ;)

The SUB1 is a fully American made EBMM guitar sporting a little less comfort than their top notch guitars, but nevertheless using only best components and craftsmanship. I would rate that guitar as ready to use for the working musician.
Epiphone Les Pauls of the different series just don't play in the same league concerning quality of woods, hardware and especially workmanship. Even if you can find high quality pickups in some artist signature models - that alone does not make a good sounding guitar, even if the ads keep telling you all the time.

Every few weeks my favourite youngster musicians "surprise" me with their newest Epis & stuff and I have seen alot of them over the years. They just don't hold up in any points against the US made EBMMs.

When it comes to tastes considering body shapes etc., I'm sure everybody is different, but having the choice between sort of a high quality / pefect action / good hardware & low budget guitar (which I rate the SUB1 to be), and a slightly overpriced (remember the G*bsun trademark) hobby & beginners Les Paul...

...honestly my friend - I can only advise you to take the SUB1 for a ride on a quality amp and chances are you might well get addicted. :)

Ich habe gesprochen!

I'm with ya Axilla, and you just can't judge a guitars sound when played through a Squier 10 watt, IMO. Like many here say, your amp is a HUGE piece of the puzzle. My amp isn't even that good, but the Sub rules...

100% not :(

Forget about the Squier SP10 amp for a sec. ;) I also use Guitar Rig 2 and Amplitube (with a Fast Track)... :p

It also totally depends on what your playing. Does the sound matches the stuff you want to play. :) I really suggest you check it out to see/feel/hear the instrument maiden666. Hopefully someone on the forums can hook you up with some cool samples.

Yes it should and you should get it, have played a SUB through several amps at guitar center and it is great, not sure about this sheilding issue, I know an EPI LP is not used to own one, plus the SUB is just built so superior to any thing else you can get for the $$, listen to those who have owned one for awhile.

I shall pipe in and say the Sub is a fantastic guitar. Definately go for the twin HB model as the neck pickup is really very good. Also no one has mentioned the bridge, i have the trem model and although i understand the components in the trem are not the same as the classic trem found on the Luke/Silo/ASS, it seems to hold up to all sorts of crazy whammy antics without losing any tuning.

Oh and it has locking pegs!

Oh and it has a really cool metal scratch plate

Oh and its an EBMM which means you become part of the best guitar family in the world!

If you look back in the forum at some of the other Sub 1 threads, you'll see that I totally love mine. I LOVE that neck pickup, to the point where I've been trying to figure out how to replicate the sound with my JP and/or Luke. I love the textured finish (no fingerprints to worry about), and the neck is smooth, satiny, stable, and sized right.

My ONLY complaint is with the lack of body contour given my wrist problems, but I also understand the cost issue, so it's not really a 'complaint'.

Go for it - you won't be disappointed. Plus, now that they've been discontinued, they could end up being a collector's item someday! :)
