Well I don't think the magnet in the pickup can loose its magnetism in 8 years unless you do something to it. So it's probably the wiring somewhere.

Could be that the pickup switch has gone bad.

You'll need to check all the wiring and connections. If you haven't done this before, take it to a local guitar tech. Shouldn't be expensive.

I've never heard of a pickup, just dying. Like everyone else said. It is almost certainly a wiring issue of some kind. Unless the pickup was physically damaged somehow. You can't buy Axis pickups anywhere, but likely Ernie Ball customer service would help you out, and replace the pickup if it were indeed, defective, or sell you a new one if it were damaged.

There was an article somewhere on Bill Lawrence weibsite about it... basically the only way you can destroy the pickup's magnet is by exposing it to a very strong magnetic field in a very particular way, or by exposing it to heat (don't remember exact temperature, but something like 300-400 degrees, you guitar would almost start catching fire at that temperature).

All other ways of destroying the pickup involve mechanical damage, which isn't the case, right?

Take it to the guitar tech or use a multimeter yourself to make sure that all connections don't just look ok, but really are ok.

Retail price on Dimarzio pickups is under $70 usually. I beleive neck pickups on the Axis is similar (not identical) to Air Norton.

You may want to try taking a soldering iron and "touching-up" the solder joints. You could have a small crack in the solder that is messing with your connection to the switch. This is called a "cold solder joint". All you need to do is heat the joint until the solder re-melts. Immediately remove the heat, and ensure the wires don't come loose while the solder is hot. That's all there is.

Man if you used the word "flow" I was about to feel like I was back at work.

Dude, I have to agree. Solding Irons are cheap, you can get one at WalrusMart.

I wouldn't think that the pickup has died. It's just got to be in the wiring/switches.
My Les Paul was a sob to sort out and that was in the hands of a guy who makes/repairs them for a living!

Just have a look at all the connections - look for the obvious but also look for anything that might be causing a short. If you still can't find anything take it to a repairer who will check the pickups with a meter and then go through the wiring loom - it may be the best way to go - I'd also hate it if you were to cause damage by droping something or burning something with your soldering iron.

Just my 2p's worth.
Let us all know what it was that was causing the problem.
