I was going to see Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" at a local art theater. While I was buying my embarassingly large popcorn with matching large Diet Coke, I saw a the DVD of HDNet films' presentation of Herbie Hancock - Possibilities. For those who don't know, this is a documentary about the making of the album of the same title. The album has collaborations between Hancock and a number of other artists like John Mayer, Sting, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan, Christina Aguilera, Santana & Angelique Kidjo, Trey Anastasio, Raoul Midon, and someone whose name escapes me. Most of the songs are reworked versions of some old songs. Some songs are new.
In particular, I can't get out of my mind two songs: "Sister Moon" with Sting, and Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," which was with Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan. There are some fantastic performances and some damn cool arrangements. Awesome stuff. I highly recommend it.
