Hey Bobbo
I very comfortable with the string spacing of my SR5. In fact, it's ideal for me. I've tried more narrow 5s, my first one was a Yamaha BB 5000A which was too narrow for my playing. I then tried went to a six string that was also a bit too narrow and it had that C string that only found useful in 2% of my playing. Those 2% I prefer to replace by creativity instead and went back to a really wide 5, an Ibanezz BTB, 35" scale and 3/4" spacing at the bridge. Too wide for my taste and I didn't like the feel of the 35" scale, in particular with the G string which I either found too taught (0.45) or too thin sounding (0.40). When I got the SR 5 I knew I'd found the perfect 5 for me. I play it almost exclusively. I adjusted really quick to it apart from two thing. I initially had your problem with a sliding G string. It's a bit closer to edge than my previous basses and also the fingerboard is not as flat. After a couple of weeks I thought no further about it however. The other thing that I needed slightly more time to get used to was that the magnets of the pickup are alot stronger than on my previous basses and as I'm resting my thumb on the B string when I'm playing on the E and A strings I had a tendency to rest abit too much on the B string which made it touch the pickup. I adjusted the pickup slightly and it hasn't been a problem since. Overall I'm very happy with the bass and I'm strongly considering getting 1 or 2 more. A fretless and perhaps an additional fretted. We'll see.
