If you go to your User CP and the "Edit Options"

*Enable Private Messaging
*Scroll down the page a bit, and click Receive Private Messages only from Buddies and Moderators

You may limit the receipt of private messages to just moderators and those on your buddy list. Other members who attempt to send messages to you will be told that you have disabled private messaging.

You can add buddies to your list here:
http://www.ernieball.com/forums/profile.php?do=editlist or by clicking on their name, viewing their profile, and then clicking Add SCREENNAME to Your Buddy List to add them to your list.

- You can also delete buddies in the same spot.

Yep... My favorite thing about PMs is when someone sends me one and I reply asking them to email me because I can't manage my PM box. Almost always, I get a follow-up PM saying "Just sent you an email because I know you hate your PM box"
