Ok, Ok I know it ain't a lefty Bongo. but they ain't out yet and besides this thing still pays for my bass addiction

This is a white Yamaha WX5 one of only a 100 or so made, I had to pay thru the nose for it. But I thought it would look nice on church gigs.

... when do the lefty Bongo come out???

It’s a Music Instrument Digital Interface Wind Controller or MIDI wind synth. It’s a synth controller based on a saxophone and has sensors for breath pressure (usually to control volume) and pitch is controlled by lip pressure. It makes no sound of its own and is a very sensitive controller for what ever synthesizer is connected to it.

If I’m controlling a sampler with drums called up I can do buzz rolls or any articulation. If you have a guitar patch called up I can play guitar parts, it’s only limited by the synthesizer you have. I use physical modelers that really scare the hell out of horn guys because I can do sections. It’s a blast to play, but since I got into bass I’m having way more fun! But I’m still quite a bit more at home on the WX5 than bass, but that is changing fast. :D

I wonder if the tenor player in my jazz quartet got one if we could make his sax sound like a trumpet or some other crazy midi instrument. Oh the possibilities. Midi is just simply amazing.

Trumpet, you bet! The cool thing is that not only can you do tenor but the whole sax family, I've got a really great bari patch. I've been working on muted trumpet lately. Plus I'm doing an all cello gig for a wedding next month. My cello patch makes you think you smell rosin.

It takes a lot of work to keep my chops up on the wind controller, since I practice bass guitar so much any more.

Lots of fun here at the Psycho ranch.

Pay through the nose or Play through the nose? :p

Looks cool, like one of the instruments from the Cantina on Mos Eisley.
