I'm wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question. I searched the forum but didn't find anything...

Does anyone know what the max string guage of the M6 tuners on a JP7 is?

I recently purchased a new BFR JP7 and I was setting it up to my liking (didn't need much...almost perfect as it was) which included changing the strings. I play D'Addario XL110-7 strings which are a .010 - .059 configuration (I know, they're not EB strings...but I love them and I've been playing them for like 15 years). I noticed that the Schaller M6 tuners that are on the JP7 don't have a large enough hole to fit the .059. This seemed odd to me. Every other guitar I've ever played has handled a .059 with ease, though none of them had locking tuners.

Any help is appreciated.

Those are the exact strings I use on my JP7. It takes a bit of coaxing but the .059 will fit. I've actually gone up to a .060 on the JP7.

I looked at the Schaller website and supposedly the .059 should fit through the tuner...maybe it's the locking mechanism that's getting in the way. I'll have to check it out and see if I can make it fit without screwing something up...definitely not going to force it if it won't go.

As far as the string guage...the standard low B is a .056 on the JP7 so we're talking 3 thousandths of an inch difference....hardly what I would call a "cable" in comparison. ;) Seeing as the difference IS so small, I wouldn't mind playing a .056, but I've been on the search for my favorite strings before. I always end up back with D'Addario...and they don't make a 7 string set of 10's with a .056 as the low B. Plus, it would be a pain to buy 6 string sets and separate .056 strings for the low B.

I've *heard* of people putting in .70's and thicker, but I've noticed a little bit of trouble with .56's. Maybe they changed a tuner?

You know...you could always unwind the string and use just the core in the tuner, but that would be WAY bad for the integrity of the string. I'll see tomorrow if I can get a .059 to fit...my new Tobacco Burst BFR 7 should be here :D
