I'm thinking of putting a Hipshot on my Sterling. Does anyone have any pros or cons about them. Also is there a particular model number to look for that matches the factory tuner's looks and dimensions? Last but not least does EBMM sell them???

Straight from Hipshot - think it is the BT1 you want - I have them on all of my 4s. Love them!

It's the BT-1, I think they're great, one piece of information that they don't seem to advertise is that you can get a tappered string post like your stock posts (they come with a big non tappered post) if you contact their customer service.

Was about to say that when ordering ask about getting with a tapered string post, the one i had came with a straight one on it an i didn't particularly like the way it looked, still functioned fine though.
Ive since removed the whole tuner and gone back to stock as didn't get on with it .

Thanks for the heads up on that. I almost ordered one before I saw this. Going to wait until Monday to call them first.

I actually have a BT-1 I just pulled off my Stingray that I'm looking to get rid of. $40 shipped and paypal'd and it's yours! Shoot me a PM if interested. Like-new condition.

After reading this thread I shot the nice folk at Hipshot an email. Long story short, I have a tapered post for my BT-1, totally no charge, even posted to Australia. Great customer service, so even thought their range isn't really suited to tarting up Music Man products, most of you own other brand instruments as well. So get behind the companies that support their customers. I previously had bought a set of Hipshot tuners on my Tele bass, as the old reverse Klusons were a bit stuffed BP, sorry to hijack your forum with a rave about another companies product, but I believe if a company is prepared to give a stuff about the customer, we should be prepared to support them back, for they may not be around tomorrow if we don't.

That's good to know. Thanks for the heads up.

For those of you with Hipshot BT1's on their MM basses, do the mounting holes on the Hipshot line up with the existing holes in from the stock MM tuners? I'm keen on trying a Hipshot, but I'm not excited to putting more holes in the neck just for an experiment.

Hey guys. I just ordered a Hipshot drop D tuner for my Bongo and some interesting new information.....from Hipshot....

"We do offer a BT1 that has the appearance of the stock tuner on Musicman basses. The differences are mainly now the length of the tuning key. The standard BT1 Xtender has a longer key then the stock tuners on both Musicman and G&L basses. The tapered post is standard on BT1's now. For Musicman basses we can do a short key with chromed tapered post."

So the taper is now standard and the "special" has a shorter tuning key to match stock. Very nice. Can't wait to get mine in.

Good to know that they are already set up for our basses. I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on one.
