I just got a SUB Sterling. The thing is all that and a bag of chips. BUT with volume up on the bass and treble and mid up I get the single coil hiss/buzz of doom. Like cheap knock off hiss and buzz. Granted I am using a very cheap practice amp but I tried it on other amps and got the same effect. What is the key? Can this thing possess the capacity to be TOO trebly? Or should I be looking for a grounding issue?
Advice welcome and if it hisses like a cobra I will never ever let it go it is just too perfectr for me.

SUBs have a 2 band EQ, not a 3 band, so I don't know how you're cranking those mids!

In any case, you're diming everything? I'd say that's the issue, right there.

Turn it all halfway up and see if the hiss disappears.

Betcha it does.

"Moderation in Moderation" has been my motto

Great advice! I played guitar for a long time and this is my second bass. I tend to set the bass in the 8.5 to full dime setting. Maybe I need to work on moderation. The hiss is more noticeable when I am not touching the strings.

Thanks!

And try it in a different room/building/county/state, not just a different amp in the same room.

Many times, interference (in the form of buzz, which maybe what we're talking about?) is introduced environmentally from hinky electricals.

(You know, I think I'm going to change my name to "Hinky Electricals".)

I don't know about the Sterling but my SUB SR has no center detents...and I thought it was boost only...

so I set my bass and treble 'flat' all the way down and adjust from there. I find it needs very little to sound great...maybe a touch of bass on most of the songs and a smidgen of treble for a couple #s that needed more bite.

Reed,

That stuff about PMs is in BP's signature and doesn't apply to you. This is a perfectly good and reasonable thread so I re-opened it to tell you that you didn't do anything wrong at all!

Jack

PS: You can STILL delete the thread if you want, but you're reading BP's signature, not a message to you.

The classic StingRay 2 band EQ is bass boost only and boost/cut on the treble and never had center detents. It's a kind of "just set it to what sounds right to you" approach.
