Hey, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how they insert their strings thru the locking tuners. I know Fender suggests inserting the strings with the 6th at 5 O'clock ,4th at 4 O'clock, 4th and 3rd strings at 3 O'clock, 2nd string at 2 O'clock and 1st string at 1 O'clock. This system works well for a Fender style peg head, with 6 tuners in a row. However, the Musicman Axis SS I have, has the 4 and 2, as we all know. Is there a best way to thread the strings thru the locking tuners? What do you do?

I generally string mine as such:

6th string at 2PM, 3rd day of the 7th month
5th string at 5:43, 1st day of 2nd month (if its a leap year, on the 2nd day)
4th string at 12:00PM of the eternal eqiunox
3rd string at oh- fourteen- hundred hours
2nd string at lunchtime
and 1st string on the first day of spring!

Just kidding! Welcome to the forum.
You know, I never bothered to check and see if there was a certain way to string up with a locking tuner. I always just lined up the hole with the string straight on, pulled the string through, locked it down, clipped the excess string and tuned up. Quick and easy. Seems to work well for me. Maybe customer service could shed some light. Maybe the FAQ section of the forum?
Hope your lovin' your Axis SS! Got any pics?

That's more or less how I do it. I don't even worry about winding it around a bunch of times. I thread the string through semi tight, lock it down, and tune to pitch. Several windings aren't necessary to hold the string or keep it it tune. The beauty of locking tuners . . . .

Also, make sure the string winds around the tuning post the right way. For the trem system, you want as straight a string pull as possible.

I align the tuner so that the string pulls through in a straight line, like the others. I then pull the string tight, turn the tuner about 15 degrees, lock it down, continue tuning to pitch. This is essentially the directions that were given with my Sperzel locking tuners from my Str@t.

the whole idea of locking tuners is to do away w/ any string wraps around the post.......& to securely hold the string to the post . this all makes for much better tuning stability.
i also recommend trimming the excess string tag VERY close to the post to prevent bloodshed...& to prevent damage to the inside of gig bags. &..... do the trimming after the guitar is tuned to pitch.

Does this work if you have one of those all-rosewood Axis guitars with the rosewood strings? :D

Yes, but under no circumstances should you breathe the dust while grinding up your rosewood guitar (or strings.)

Man, I learned this one the hard way.

At a gig about 4 few years ago, we were thrashing about on stage and I turned a sharp left on stage and my 7 string Ibanez nailed my singer in the face and gave him a nasty cut/bruise. He didn't miss a beat.

How metal is that? Haha.

+1.

This is just the way I do it on my ASS, and the strings never slip at all.
