So, norm and I met up (for me) at the butt crack of noon to attend the Steve Morse/Dixie Dregs concert in Tempe. We met, we ate…we closed the buffet, and children in parts of the world are going hungry because of us. (norm laughs at this sentence, and the thought of hungry kids) Post-gluttony, we partook of the forums on each of my computers (norm, for once, had nothing to say!), then began the long 8 mile journey to the venue (whew!). :D

We got there and waited for the show; during the wait, we took up conversation with people around us. Small world; we run into a guy named Steve (how appropriate!) who is also a member of the forums. He’s around from time to time, and ‘twas a pleasure to meet him (shout out to you, bro!) Fellow Pet owner, and he’s cool…we hung. :)

The opening act was an acoustic solo act; when he began playing, ‘twas painfully obvious that dude didn’t seem to be the right opening act for the Dixie Dregs. (As norm said, you don’t have Glen Campbell opening for Rush…this was one of those scenarios!) Not busting the guy’s chops, he’s playing for about 300 people, but Susie Creamcheese (as Steve’s dad referred to him) was just a bad match…blame the promoters and organizers.

The Steve Morse Band took the stage, and all was right in the world. We were about 15 feet from the stage…couldn’t see squat. :p This guy is awesome, and the band, most notably Dave LaRue, are just the same (Dave LaRue is a monster on the bass!) They started out with a medley of “Gimme Some Lovin’”, “Summertime Blues”, “Freebird”, and “My Sharona”, and went from there. A great classical style duet with Steve and Dave followed up later on. The group played 8-9 songs, then a short break, and then the Dregs took the stage as a whole, and played 13 songs. A phenomenal version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” was played, and “The Bash”, a rocked-out bluegrass medley, then the final song, “Odyssey”, in which there was a goof. To make sure that we got our money’s worth, in the encore, they came out and made due by replaying the errant section the right way ;) (this also included a drum duet), as well as “Blood Sucking Leeches”.

Keith, norm wants you to know that they played Kat Food. Per him, so there. :p

After the concert, we waited around for the meet and greet, and were blessed with the opportunity to meet and chat with for a fair amount of time with one Steve Morse and one Dave LaRue. As you can see in the picture posted above, they were absolutely great guys, and more than happy to pose for a picture with ours truly. We made mention of the fact that we were involved with the forum, as well as devout EBMM owners, and the chat progressed from there. Great talents, and great guys to boot! As before, both of them were made aware of the forums, both were invited to the forums, and both said that they would pop in and say hi sometime, so don’t be surprised if you happen to see them around here.

In all, I was truly amazed by Steve’s playing and his techniques. I had already had respect for the man to begin with, but seeing him tonight, as well as his cordiality, willingness to partake of the “photo opps”, as well as his down to earth attitude raised that level about 257 points higher than before.

norm says that he needs one of Steve’s new guitars…the spending spree starts again. ;)

Enclosed are some actions shots of our fellow EBMM'er's...enjoy.

Now, stop reading my blabber and go play your guitar (as was preached by norm). :)

Yes, this was cool...this was last night.

I am the guy in the middle, with the jacked up hair and the goofy "holy sh*t, I'm standing between two phenomenal players...this is BAD A**" look on his face. (Oh, and I don't how this came about, but that goofy a** grin...) :D

Norm mentioned after you saw Steve live, you might have to rethink your guitar hero.

If they show up on the forum, how cool would that be? But how could they not know about it? Very puzzling.

We talked to Steve the night before right after the show (not Norm who went out with his smoking buddies--to smoke I think).

Norm said he would post thoughts on that show (wonder how it compares to AZ).

Looks like Steve is playing the new Morse model that they had at NAMM. Missing the slant single coil, color is only available on the Morse I believe.

Sounds like a good show. Have always wanted to see the Dregs, maybe they'll come to Austin.

Great pics Darrell. I can't believe I wasn't able to make it to the show. I'm heart broken after seeing those pictures. :(

Just to give everyone a heads up, Darrell invited me along to check out the show. That in itself was a super cool jesture and a class act in my book. I think this is a great forum when a newbie is asked to meet up with veterans of the group. Unfortunately I had family in town while also remodeling a newly purchased home. I just can't believe I missed such an opportunity to meet Steve and Dave.
