I check my relief just by pressing the string down at the first fret and the fret where the neck meets the body. Its a quick and easy way to see if I need an adjustment.

+1 for me too.

I've just had my A string start to buzz only and went for a 1/4 turn on the saddle - sorted it.

Every guitar neck is different though, you cant go solely by measurements.
My Stingray buzzes terrible if its been in the cold of the van for a while, after being inside for a bit, its ok.
Even if you get low action without buzz, you can still be killing your tone and sustain.
