The ages of our band members range from 49-51, and any time anyone mentions gigging, the rest of us slap him down with a reminder that someone's got to move the equipment. Been there; done that. No more. Strictly a hobby where we have an awesome rehearsal space and we bring in our own audience when we desire.
lmao thats great

I'm blessed in that my main payin g gigs are with Christian artists, but I'm still lucky enough to play in the "Church of the Blessed Misfits" and play some good booty shakin' tunes for Saturday nights. ;)

but I will agree that whether you're Buddhist,Ba'hai,or an atheist, to be able to put more than just "gettin' through the changes to get paid" and put some metaphysics into it... that makes for some interesting jams

I like to play in church, but don’t as much as I use to.

I play a lot, but my primary job is full time Dad/House Husband. My wife makes all the “real” money and works all the time, so I do mean “full time Dad”. :D

I have a great gig scene going here in Greensboro right now. My bass gig is a house band gig every Saturday night at “Fiddler’s Cove” in Liberty, NC from 7 to 9 pm. And most of my Greensboro gigs start at 10:00pm, so I often do a double header. I play keys and wind controller with a couple of bands in town and get some session work, this is how I support my bass addiction.

Urwords,

You can't play for a living if your living in Pittsburgh. One of my best friends managed to do it here for many years, but eventually even HE had to work a day job to keep it together.

Personally, I play for a hobby. I played the bar scene when I was in high school, and I worked as a sound man for many years with my friend mentioned above.

But the day job is what brings in the dough, and I'm a family man these days, so there's no opportunity to chuck it all and try to play for a living. I play with a band to write original music and record it. The mere thought of gigging makes my back hurt, yet I've played two gigs in the last 4 days... go figure.

Ya I know im probably going to move back out to cali. Would your friend happen to own Rust Records? and Cherry Monroe came out of pittsburgh and they are doing it so its do able...

O today I was talking to these guys band in pa that are looking for a guitarist and i told them i play bass so i wouldnt be of any help. and they said dont count youself out yet. their bassist is actully a guitarist ... They are having some guitarist try out and the one kid said most of them are metal heads and into alot of open palm muted d chords... so nothing amazing... But anyways... i was talking to them and they said they would probably just take a bassist and have there guitarist come back on guitar... So when i get back I have a Try out setup so thats going to be fun stuff... And i talked to 2 of the 3 guys and they are cool.. and all christian one of them also being edge. so maybe it isnt that hard to find a group of christians lol

Right now I play for a living. During the winter I also substitute teach at a H.S. cuz it allows me to take off for tours, gigs, whatever might come up.

How do I do it? By reading craploads of self-help books. :)

I'm learning whatever I want in life, I'll see when I believe it. Not the other way around.

Not a hobby...

More like a compulsion. I don't think of myself as a hobbiest (I play with 3 different groups), but I'm not a semi-pro, either. I play music because I have to play. I don't know what else to do. I have a day job, but most of the time I don't enjoy work. I love to practice and I love to play in bars or at festivals or in a recording studio. I'm more like a pro-am. Until I retire to Nashville in 2009. Then we'll see what category I fit into.

i quit my 9-5 two years ago to play full time and i love it. i don't make much money but i enjoy life a whole lot more. fortunately i am very good at budgeting and i don't mind eating like a student.... diversity and networking are the key.
