How do you record your bass at home?

DI Box? DI out of your amp's XLR out? Recording preamp? POD-style modeling product? Microphone and cab? If so, what microphone? Plug bass into interface?

I haven't the foggiest idea how to do this stuff.

I use a M-audio Firewire Solo to record everything. It's a simple, cheap external soundcard with some in-and outputs.

If I just want to record something fast, to remember the bassline, I plug my bass into the firewire.
More time; XLR-out from my amp to XLR-in.
Lots of time; mic in front of cab, mic-in on firewire solo.

It's definately not the best external soundcard, but it's fair enough for me. All recording is done with Audacity (freeware).

So far I'v recordeed bas direct line in, with sansamp BDDI, and XLR out from Mesa Bigblock 750. Mesa workd best for me, mabey cos it has tube preamp. I didn't liked sansamp. The sound was pretty good, but it was hard to cut through in the mix. Ihave never combined mesa with sansamp, cos i naven't got them in the same time.

Afcourse it was recorded with Y....a bass, that I'v sold recently. Now I'm waiting for my very first MM Bongo 5HS, and I,ll see if there's any difference:)

I use a Audix i5 to mic my cab, that mic running into my firebox and the firebox using the firewire port to run to my computer and cubase as the interface.

I do have a question for anyone who has used a firebox and/or cubase though:

When I do voals into the mic, they come out at the proper level )as monitored by me using headphones plugged into the return of the firebox) but when I mic my guitar OR bass cabs, the mic seems to barely pic up anything. I cant even run the gains on the firebox and internally in cubase high enough to get good volume out of it. The mic is right up on the speaker cloth, directly in front of the speaker. Any ideas? is this an issue with presonus firebox, the software or possibly the mic? I sholdnt have to crank my amp to 9 to get decent volume in my recording for crying out loud

Maybe you need a microphone preamp. I don't know. My friend and I are just starting to get into this home recording thing. He faced the same thing trying to record his guitar. I'm sure I will too when I start trying to record. I'm still trying to figure out what interface I want to use. Actually, let's face it, my computer is basically going to need to be replaced before I do anything. Then, I can worry about the interface and all this other stuff.

i run my ampeg 210 and fender 115 together........set seperate mics on each cab,as well as a direct line.

these go into my m-audio project mix 1/0 firewire.

then into the alesis multimix 8...........run that into protools ........all seperate lines, and i get a sweet clean sound,or i can jack up any type of effect i want.........

but with this Sterling.........who needs effects right?

POD-style modeling product?

I use that for guitar.

For bass, I go directly into a Mackie Micro 1202, which then goes directly into the input of my PowerBook. Sounds not bad, and it works. Though I guess it's considered by many a recording engineer as "substandard"... ;)

Home setup:
SansAmp Bass Driver DI

I run parallel out to an Ampeg B-50R on a tiltback stand for monitoring, and XLR into a Fostex MR-16HD running ADAT into a EMU 1212M using Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio.

Practice space setup:
XLR out the back of my Mesa Big Block 750 into the Foxtex MR-16HD.

I use the XLR out on my Redhead into the console, sometimes I use a 57 on one of the speakers too.

I have a Tascam 24 track recorder. Usually I just plug right in but sometimes I use a DI. It's really a nice machine, I just wish I knew how to use it better.

I have a 17" iMac and Pro Tools mBox 2. I'll usually record guitar direct with Amplitube, and bass goes either direct with Amplitube or the effected direct out from my Line 6 combo (the 1x10).

I use garageband and pro tools interchangeably. There are some times I like the ease of use of garageband with the drum looks and stuff like that, especially just to record ideas, etc. I've been using pro tools forever, though, so I usually end up there at the end of the day.

I've got a Zoom H4 recorder, I can plug directly into an input and record. I've had bad luck with getting recording software to sync properly (audio or midi) with or without using the H4 for an interface. I find the H4 great for recording rehearsals and shows, too

Otherwise I just record ideas with the internal mic in my Creative Zen MP3 player.

A Phil Jones Bass Buddy into an M-Audio Firewire 410 to ProTools or the Bass Buddy into an RME Fireface 800 into Logic 7 Pro.

Direct to either iMac -> GarageBand or direct to Boss Micro-BR.

I mike the cab with an AKG D112 and take a D.I. from the amp to Sonar Producer via a Motu 828 Firewire (sometimes in combination with a Mackie mixer or Focusrite pre-amp). Having both mike and DI tracks provides alot of sonic options downstream. I'm still not quite satisfied with my set-up - though it is very good - but I'm not sure of the next step.
