I have finally got round to attaching Dimarzio straplocks to my JP6 and am finding it difficult to play the guitar at the height/strap length that I usually play. Im finding that the point at the top of the cutaway digs in to my wrist when playing the JP6 low slung.

The cutaway is fine when I shorten the strap to about the length that JP himself uses. I guess that I will just have to adapt my playing style to accommodate this awesome guitar, I overlooked this issue when I bought it and I guess this is probably a potential drawback of a signature guitar... maybe the BFR body shape would have suited me more.

Anyway - did anyone else need to alter their playing style etc to accommodate the body shape of the JP6??

A couple years ago when I first got a Cliplock I could never get it high enough. I've grown a few inches, so it's fine now.

I found that the right arm scoop made me want to center my arm to it. But I was wearing the guitar higher anyway for maximum shred power, so it was fine.

Well, I don't have a JP, but I play my Axis SS pretty high, kind of like Tom Morello..... Probably doesn't look as cool, but at that height I have about 95% of the same accuracy and precision as if I was sitting down and playing.

My arm doesn't actually hit the contour when I play standing, I'm kinda just to the (my) left of it. I play it about waistish height I guess, same as my silo special- maybe a bit lower.

I where my Petrucci (and my others) at about the same height as Jon......mainly 'cause it just ain't comfortable lower down for me.....

It was a nightmare with my Morses and it really caused my right shoulder some grief 'cause of the lack of cutaways, but the Petrucci scoop makes it just about the most comfortable guitar in the world for me.....

The guitar is designed with JP in mind and his technique so i think it best to play his guitar up high the way he plays it.
Also your own technique will improve as ive found this to be the case since i got my JP!

Thanks for all responses - I use my different guitars for different situations (Les Pauls, ESP DV8, Jackson Dinkys, Ibanez 7 strings) but have always consistently worn the guitars at the same height... Guess I will just have to get used to having the JP6 a lot higher - and if it improves my playing/technique then that is an added bonus!

I wear it kinda high, but it's comfortable that way with the forearm scoop. Plus, it puts you in a more "proper" playing position.

High, but not as high as JP. I can't play comfortably with any guitar too low.

I never really thought of it, but the way the forearm scoop is made, there is probably a limited range of positions. Thus, playing it lower than John normally does would probably be a bit uncomfortable. I find just the opposite to be true with the SUB1 that has no contour - I have to play it really low. I know Steve Morse plays his guitar really low.

no different from my other guitars, not too low and not too high. Petrucci once said "I wear my guitars too high to be cool" - I don't wanna do that. :)

I had a couple of Morses - I love those guitars, but 'cause I wear the guitar high it was just a nightmare....messed up my right shoulder 'cause my arm was at a stupid angle as there are no cutaways....

I just can't play the guitar lower down.........I don't know how Zakk Wylde does it!

I think I wear my JP pretty high, I prefer comfort than so called "good looking". I wonder how would I look with JP7 :) I hope to answer this asap.

best,

I tend to wear my Medallion Gold JP6 a little bit higher than my other guitars due to fitting comfortably within the "scoop". Generally the guitars hit the belt buckle range but the JP is a tad higher.
