A coworker of mine wanted to adopt some children. That didn’t work out but he did end up sponsoring a family on his own accord. The heart of this family is two little boys. He had the privilege of attending the boy’s school Christmas musical performance. That’s where he learned some interesting things.

In Arizona, funding for the arts in the public schools is provided solely by donations.

However, as citizens of Arizona, we can donate up to $(some number) each with a tax deferred donation. So one gets that money back with the state tax return. The good part of this is that I get to tell the state how to spend tax dollars by simply giving them an interest free loan. The bad part of this is that schools in lower income areas might not have supporters of the children that can afford an interest free loan to support their children’s music program.

I know for me music education at an early age was a vital element to my success as a person in everything I do.

I am not asking anyone for a donation to anywhere but I simply mention this as something I am doing to help out something I believe in. I would like to encourage everyone to do whatever they can to help children learn music.

That way they will be interested in guitar virtuosos, seek out the Morses, Petruccis and Lukes and then need an Ernie Ball Musicman Guitar. :)

Great post Norm.

Funding for the arts is in a dismal state in most places, including where I live.

Our priorities are due for a re-alignment.

i think its a great thing your doing buddy!

i have a friend who was a music teacher for a while and she told me all sorts of horrible stories about the lack of funding in our area. She eventually had to quit b/c they couldnt afford 2 full time teachers.
