I live in asheville NC. Downtown I found a musicman guitar--an old axis sport. it's in sort of ok condition. it's got a pretty big nick in the body, it has no case and the neck looks really dirty and stained.

it's grey/silver. the metal componets in back of the guitar are dirty and slightly rusted a little. the guitar is silver/grey almost with a slight sparkle.

but it plays great. it's the easiest playing guitar i've ever picked up. I'm a bass player formerly so...

my question is

what's the most I should be willing to pay?

before you answer there's something else
that conscerns me.

the pick ups are soapbox pick ups but I don't know what kind.

all the pictures of the non humbucking pickups that I've seen show six or eight screws literally going from left to right down the middle of the pick ups. and there is a space between the screws, dividing them equally, down the middle of the pick up.

correct?

well

my guitar has a screw where the space should be so that the head of the screw over laps the two screws around it slightly. it just looks weird?

has there ever been a axis sport like this one or does this sound like a "custom job?"

anyways, I'm trying to make sure it's all ernie ball with no jimmy riggin involved.
but it does work. I played it. sounds ok through the crappy amp they had.

so my questions are

what do think should be the most I offer to pay?

and

what's the deal with the pick ups?

ps

it's listed for 800.00

he's said he'd take 600.00 cash for it.

i'm hoping to pay no more than 500.00

opinions?

The extra screw that seems to "overlap" the others is there to hold the pickup cover on the pickup. There should be 2 screws like that, and if I remember correctly, they are phillips.

If it plays and sounds the way you want it to, $600 sounds like a fair price, especially if you get a case with it!

I wonder if the color is "Gunsmoke"

Post the serial number if you get the chance, and someone at EB can look it up for you.

The Axis Sport was put out in platinum and was available with MM90's - EBMM's own version of a P90. The pickups will have 8 screwheads down the center - 6 under the strings for the pole pieces and one each between 2/3 and 4/5 which hold the covers.

I found a picture of a platinum sport in an old thread - so if it looks like this your good to go.

$600 is a pretty decent price for a used sport, but i don't know the actual condition if you can get it for less great but its not bad

Good Luck

Those 2 screws do more than hold the covers on. They also serve as the mounting screws which hold the pickups in the guitar. Perfectly normal.

Its a pawn shop. Walk in with 5 one hundred dollar bills and ask for a deal. If he wants $600, he probably has about $100 in it.
