Sounds like you're off to a good start - especially about not really being able to tell what something sounds like in a noisy music store (not just GC, but they are magnets for that).

Gotta love any high traffic music store.

Seems like the mentality in that case is "lets see how many notes I can play, as fast as I can play em".

Don't forget, "As loud as I can play them."

Its funny, whenever I am in Guitar Center trying gear out, I dont usually have the amp up loud like everyone else does. I have it at a decent volume where I can hear the bass and so can the people in closs proximity, but no more. I find it rude to sit there and blast sh1t so loud that others cant get a good feel for their own gear. Ive actually gone up to people and removed the guitar cable from their guitar and amp and taken it from them before :D They dont do anything usually because they are so shocked that anyone would even do that.
eff'em I say. :p

OTOH, having a guitar and drums bashing away right next to you might be a good indication of how it'll work on a gig. Well, probably not most of the guitar players and drummers at those places but - naah, the return policy is a better bet!

Long time ago I walked into a GC and some guy was just pounding on a drum kit in a private room that wasn't quite sound proof. He was a monster - then I found out it was Jonathon Moffet who was warming up for a clinic they were having that day...
