Just wondering if any Axis owners out there replaced their humbucker pickups with humbucker sized P90s? I'm considering buying a set of Rio Grande Bastard and Fat Bastard P90s for my Axis SS. Not sure if they will fit perfectly or not and will check further on that before I buy them, but I was curious if any one else has already tried this. The stock buckers are great but I'm more of a single coil player. I might try to swap for a Axis with P90s but I'm reluctant to let mine go since it plays and feels so good. Any help or suggestions is always much appreciated...:)

If worse comes to worse, you could always try the DiMarzio Bluesbuckers, which I would think would be a direct retrofit for the stock Axis units. Unfortunately, I've not had the pleasure of test-driving a set yet, so I can't comment on how they sound...definitely give us the word if you do, tho!

Oh, I hear that Bill Lawrence makes a heckuva HB sized P90, too, and quite nicely priced as well. Noisefree to boot, unlike some of the boutique jobs costing much more. Again, haven't tried one or know if it'd fit in the Axis PU routings, but Bill might possibly help if you faxed him a tracing of one.

Bill Lawrence L-490, available as a neck and bridge version.
The Dimarzio Bluesbucker sounds really great, if you want a P90 sound.

I've heard hot and cold reviews for the Rio Bastards. I myself had a set of Rio single coils in my Albert Lee for about 3 weeks. Rio pickups all seem to have a bit of a upper midrange "hump" that I personally didn't care for. Not saying you shouldn't try, since I sold mine on ebay for about 90% of what I payed for them.

Seymour Duncan just came out with the Phat Cats, a P-90 in humbucker size. These are getting good reviews. The only catch is that they only come with a cover, so if you're looking for a black or creme colored one, you're out of luck.
