Since getting my JP back I have been playing the crap out it (I just love this guitar). The action is very low, like 1mm at the 12th fret on both treble and bass side! But, I have no real buzzing issues with it, even playing it sans amp. Truly amazing guitar.

Anyways, I was just thinking earlier today about my gear and I thought about my old Boogie Mark III combo I bought right out of high school. My first real amp. I couldn't afford a half stack at the time, so I opted for the 1x12 combo which came out to about the same money as the head alone would have cost.

This baby is a green stripe (born in '92), with the Simul-Class circuitry. Despite being a green stripe (the last in the evolution of the Mark III) and being born in '92, it's a black tolex cab instead of wood. Obviously they still made the tolex IIIs then (I am no Boogie expert, mind you). This was custom ordered for me through a local dealer. The sales guy was great! He made me come to his band's rehearsal (right down the street from the store) to hear his Mark III half stack, and I was sold! Had to have one.

So I haven't played this amp in years, because it's just too loud for practice and I don't play in a band anymore and I sort of got "tired" of the tone of it for some reason. I don't know why, but I am thinking about this amp so I go in, pull off the cover, bring it out from the corner it sits in all the time and plug it up and tweak the settings. Tweaking some more and I get away from what I used to dial in as a kid and WHAMO! Instant killer tone, man! Louder than Zeus' farts and tons of saturated gain. I seriously had to leave the room to keep playing it. Of course, I was using my Pet and I probably jammed for a good 30 mins. It's a shame I knew so little when I was a kid. I really had no idea what I had in my possession. I loved that amp, but I really didn't know what I was doing. :D The way I used to set it up was pretty harsh and brittle, but with just a few tweaks I got it nice fat and round.

Now mind you, this is a combo! I imagine that with better/fresher tubes (I have old Sovteks in there and sounds like they are about to go) and a nice 2x12 or 4x12 cab and this thing would be even more of a monster.

I feel like a kid that just found one of his long forgotten favorite toys in the bottom of the toybox. :D Feels like a new toy, but has the charm and sentiment of an old one.

So learn from this! Go dig out some of your old equipment and try it again with more mature ears. You might just discover something you couldn't have appreciated when you were younger!!

Just call MESA and order some new tubes if needed. I think you can order them online. If you call, they will send out exactly what you need for your amp model.
