I've tried a Tone Zone in an Axis Sport. It's not the same as the original pickup, but similar. A bit fuzzier when used with gain, IME. I've tried that TZ and another TZ in various guitars and that is the only pairing that I like. But it suits that particular guitar well. I had a basswood/Floyd guitar from another manufacturer back in the day and the TZ was great in that one.
I put an Air Zone in a Silo Sp, a JP6, and a Morse (I kept the original pickguard intact!). Can you tell I like this pickup? That one is less similar, but a great pickup if you like a warmer tone with a bit less output.
I like the tone zone in a mahogany guitar with maple neck I had. Very fat and warm yet articulate and cut through nicely. I also agree with agt...the air zone is also very warm and fat with less output but I would say more responsive and versatile than the TZ. I really loved it in my silo special. I would also look into the AT1...that will be a definite for my next Silo Special.
I have used the Tone Zone in my Silo Special as well for a few years now. It offers a good amount of lows, and mids and it stays clear with out really giving that "woofy" sound. I have tried it other guitars and have not gotten the same results. Its all about trial and errors. I tried a Evolution, Super Distortion, and The Breed befor I settled on the Tone Zone but the other pickups sound good in other guitars.
I love the Tone Zone, but to me, it sounds WAY different than the EVH bridge pickup. WAY different. Tons more midrange. The Axis pickups have no similar replacement to my ears.
What type of pickups were used in the Eddie Van Halen MusicMan Guitar?
These pickups were only available as original equipment on the EVH MusicMan guitar. MusicMan replaced the Van Halen guitar with a very similar model called the Axis, which uses the same pickups. The closest-sounding pickups we offer are the Air Norton™ for the neck position and the AT-1™ for the bridge position.
As long as we're talking DiMarzio bridge pickups, I guess this isn't too OT!
I recently installed a DiMarzio Injector bridge into my former HH AL. It is now loaded with Area '67's in the neck and middle and the Injector in the bridge. Holy smokes do those pickups rock! I have had the Areas for a number of years - and I had always struggled to find the perfect bridge pickup to go with them. I tried a bunch and settled for a few years on the Tone Zone S. It was very good - but the Injector is just perfect!
Sorry for hijacking - just thought some people might want to know about the Injector.
