WOW, this is takng the sport out of Ebay purchasing. I had the high bid until 5 seconds and miraculously i get beat by 50 bucks......how do it know? I know how it knows it just reminded me of a old thermous joke.

Seriously I guess I just have to become a sniper or when there is a buy it now and the price is reasonable press that button....oh yeah I did that too this weekend and it was a dealer and they had sold the item 8 hours ago and forgot ot update ebay......

I remember when ebay was fun....
Oh yeah I also got an email telling me the item that was esniped is now available to me
it wasnt in the form of a second chance offer the guy emailed me from his personal web address......

That sucks! I had that happen to me one too many times. In turn I became one of the most vicious ESniper's out there. :p

Of course in doing that it's certain that I end up paying more than I should have. :p

Better luck next time! :)

Bummer BP I've been there, sadly on both sides of this fence. I got burn on my first EBMM for the CLB in the last 20 seconds.

What were you bidding on?

Nice the dude sent you an email for an offer to buy it, that blows. Probably wanted a hell of a lot more than he paid for it huh?

I don’t understand “sniping”. The object is to win/buy the item for as little as possible, no? If someone really wants to win the item, they’ll wait until the clock has nearly run out, and place an over-the-top bid, making it nearly impossible to be outbid in the remaining seconds. How is that sniping? I think it’s just playing a smart game. And if there’s a BIN available, and you want the item badly enough, who is to blame if you pinch pennies and wait to be “sniped”? :D

I think eBay still is fun. :)

I learned a lesson on Sunday. Stumbled across a very nice guitar with quite a low BIN. Looked at something else for 5 mins on another site, came back and it had been BIN'ned by someone else!

Double arse!!!!!

Lesson: He who hesitates will inevitably lose!

That's what happened to me with Tim O'Sullivan's Glacier Blue Sparkle ASS. I went ot get a coffee and it was gone when I came back. Such is life sometime. It's either meant to be or it isn't.

The only fun auctions (to me) are the low reserve/low starting price. Those are the ones I snipe like crazy. I won a guitar the other day by sniping it at the last second. The bids weren't too high on it, and I wound up getting it for $15 over the next highest bid.

With BIN auctions, you're better off pulling the trigger if the price is right. (I wish someone would to that with the guitar I've got for sale . . .)

I think 95% of people are snipers on guitars and guitar stuff anymore...probably other things as well....

I've had it happen to me a million times (been sniped)... I've done it a few too many times myself..(probably because it has been the only way to win) you have to snipe when you know there are snipers.... fight fire with fire....

ain't that the ****z...

I was bidding on some tools this weekend, they have a BIN price, but lots of folks have put in starting bid and waited for the auction to end. Most everyone that knows about these particular tools has respected the bidders bids and let them go to the end, knowing that the seller will relist some more of these tools with a BIN usually within 24 hours. So there has been alot of respect demonstrated for other folks. Well, I bid the starting bid and everything was fine then, SHAZAAM!!! a newbie comes along and outbids me, and doesn't realize he just put the cost almost the same as the BIN price to begin with.

There is something to be said about BIN and I totally agree with you guys, if it looks good, DO NOT HESITATE! LOL I can't tell you how many great looking BIN's I've add to my watch list only to come back in a few and they're gone.

You really got to watch the ZERO's and people with less than 30 feedbacks. I almost completely avoid auctions with these people bidding, cause they seem to be insane. Most of them appear to have done absolutley no research on product and cost. Some appear to have bidding fever. They're rabid I tell ya..

That stinks of shell bidding where the seller has another ebay account(ant) bid a high bid to find out what the max bid was for the highest person. Then ofcourse they go back to the highest bidder and ask for that amount.

Sniping is what it is at ebay. I figure if someone bids more than me then it wasn't mine.

I'm one of those under 30 feedback people. even I stay out of auctions where low or now feedback bidders are swimming.

I don't use eBay that much, but I do try and grab a good deal when I can. Plus, I tend to buy/bid on the higher dollar items (guitars, amps etc) instead of lower priced items. This is why I'm at 26, and my wife's feedback score is pushing 100.

Alas, BP, sniping is the only way on eBay. I learned that long ago. If you really want something, gotta wait to about 30 secs to go, put in your almost max bid, watch to see if anyone is out there sniping with you and then zap in there with your total max bid with about 5 secs to go.

I sniped for a while when it was new and exciting...now, I'll either BIN or set my max bid and hit "confirm".

If I get the item, great...if not, next.

The funny thing is that I looked at the guitar, pondered the purchase, went to bed, woke up and then did the deed on ebay. I had no sense of urgency, yet I was just lucky I suppose.

Fact is, it’s the bidders who throw in early bids who drive the price of an item up. Great for the seller, but not for the bargain hunter.

What Ernie said about testing to see if there’s any other opportunists out there playing the same game as you, is so true. It’s by no means a sure bet to wait till the final seconds. Throwing a red herring out for bait about 45 seconds before the end can draw him out of his cover. Then you launch your maximum final blow. But even that doesn’t guarantee he won’t outsmart you in the end, or just get lucky.

It's that old Chinese sage, Ti Ming, that wins the day. ;)

Sterling, you need to be very careful of second chance offers that don't come through Ebay. It happened to me once and I almost got scammed for big dollars. I bet if you contact the seller through the auction, he'll tell you he doesn't know anything about the 2nd offer.
