I'd really appreciate your comments on the Symphony X guys. I find Michael Romeo to be a brilliant singwriter and arranger, and wonder what kid of guy he is to chat with.
well, if you don't mind an answer from someone else, I don't mind chipping in
I met him after a gig in 2004 when they were opening for Queensryche. SX's set was over and it was already getting fairly late (considering the drive I had ahead of me to get home)so I left before QR since I had seen them earlier that year and I had to be at school at 7 am the next morning. Anyway, on the way back to the car, my drummer and I saw Romeo out back having a smoke so we went up and chatted for a good 20 minutes or so without any other random fans running up. He was a genuinely nice guy and seemed more than happy to just sit around and chat. We told him how our band was covering a few of his songs and I asked him some stuff about how he fingered certain licks in that particular tune. After talking about some more tunes we chatted about gear, how the tour was going, etc. I mentioned that I had seen Dream Theater earlier that month, which led to some discussion about Dream Theater and other bands on the prog scene. After a while a manager came out and told him he was needed in the back. We shook hands and that was that.
I was kicking myself afterwards because I completely forgot to try to get a picture with him. Even worse, he seemed genuinely interested in hearing some stuff from my band and told me to get him some recordings when we had them but no contact info was exchanged.
In retrospect, I'm kinda glad we didn't just do the whole fanboy "OMG CAN I HAVE YOUR AUTOGRAPH!!". I'm more pleased with having just been able to sit around and BS with one of my heroes than I would be with a photograph.
