Sweet! Instant relic! DUDE! You really don't want to stop that and restore it....besides you'd have to REPAINT it...prolly looks awesome. howsabout some pix?
Don't touch! All the character and soul is in that yellowing.
Post a pic. would love to see it. I like the shade of
nicotine stained maple fngerboards too.
I'm with these guys! I would let it go all the way you can. Do you know how much guys are paying for "reliced" strats? Think of it as a maturing investment. And for god sakes, keep playing that thing! Oh, and we want to see some pics, please????
In 1986, I was given a 1972 Blonde Telecaster Custom that belonged to my Uncle that died in 1974. It had been kept in my Grandmothers back bedroom in it's case since he died. The varnish on the headstock had darkened, the finish was distressed (the paint had cracked on the body), but the hardware and electronics where in N.O.S. condition. Back in 86, everyone was playing Super-Strats like Kramer Barettas and B.C. Rich Gunslingers. Needless to say, the Tele was not too cool. Like the dumb-ass 16 year old kid that I was, I had the body professionally re-painted a deep reverse blue-burst (dark blue middle to light blue edges).
That in itself ruined the vintage value of the guitar, not to mention the tone of the guitar. In 1991, I traded it for an Epiphone Les Paul. That's right, and EPIPHONE.
Now, I see them in guitar shops hanging on the wall for $3200, and in worse condition than mine was in originally.
Moral of the story is, DO NOT HAVE YOUR GUITAR RE-PAINTED OR RESTORED! Just leave it the way it is. If you ever go to sell it later, the yellowing of the paint will not matter as much as playability. Also, something magic happens when the original paint and wood ages togheter. The tone is something you can't re-produce.
I don't know what these guys are smokin'. That thing looks terrible! I don't know how you can stand the sight of that hideous thing!!! Why don't you let me help you out. I'll take it off your hands for a nominal fee so you don't have to look at it ANYMORE!
