I agree with Tim, there is a very slight difference in thickness but not much. The high e-string on the EVH is just a tiny bit closer to the edge of the fretboard than a regular Axis and I have had it slip off a few times while playing and that doesnt happen with my normal Axis but you could get used to it. Overall I prefer the Axis for playability (high e-string placement, contour and switch position) but there's really not an enormous amount in it! Probably the biggest factor is a new instrument will have less wear and tear and you can get it in the colour and config you want, the older one is more collectible...decisions decisions!

It's a tough decision, but I think I'm gonna have to pass. It's not the colour I want, and the narrow fretboard would probably bother me alot.

Darn it - why is a Pacific blue burst axis or ASS so hard to find (I know theres a couple on ebay, but they won't ship outside the us) ? I found a good looking one in Sweden, but I think that 1870$ is pretty steep - still, it's a lot cheaper than the list price in Denmark (we pay a whopping 25% extra taxes on any goods from the US) and it looks great:
