Just got back from a gig, and had a terrible thing happen. I broke a string on both my guitars! On my yellow Axis and my Sunburst Axis too. I was left guitarless just before Freebird. Luckily, the other guitar player had a spare guitar. Even though he does have an Axis (left at home!), his spare was a Gordon Smith Explorer. I havent played a non EBMM axe at a gig for ages. It was fine apart from the action was too low, I didnt like the short scale, the pickups were microphonic and the bridge sat in the wrong place!

Next gig I am taking 3 balls with me, just to be certain!

I have played a couple of GS guitars...great value, but not an EBMM. Did you not have extra strings with you???

Boy scout Jonny

I did indeed have extra strings with me! I always carry at least 3 sets! It happened just before the last number of the night, and I was handed the explorer before I knew what was happening! Thought I would try it just to see what it was like!

I carry spare everything! Literally! Amps, pedals leads, strings EVERYTHING!!!

Yes! After having an amp go down with me at a gig, and having my Line 6 shortboard destroyed by an active Mackie fall on it, and various other failures throughout the years I take no chances! I have a Peavey Bandit that lives in my boot (trunk), a couple of drive pedals and an old Chorus in my bag, and at least 2 of every kind of lead I use. Plus 3 sets of strings, Volume knob (I have had them snap off mid gig!) Soldering iron Schaller Straplock bits, Allen keys, screwdrivers etc. When you are being paid good money to perform, you need to cover every eventuality! I rarely have a situation where I cant carry on!

I'm with Tim. I keep an entire alternate rig with me nowadays. My bass player smoked an amp in the middle of a gig a few years ago, and I started thinking more in terms of redundancy at a gig.

My backup rig is nice & small though.. a power amp and a modeling pedalboard. The power amp is in a rack with my Furman (where EVERYTHING gets plugged), and the pedalboard is packed neatly in it's little carying case. I get a whole backup amp/effects system for the price of some extra weight in my rack and a spare pedalboard nearby (usually in the car).

So, my normal rig is an old-school pedalboard full of individual stompboxes, and my Triple X head into a Behringer cabinet. If the head fails, I can use the alternate rig through the same cabinet. If the cabinet fails, I can run the modeling pedalboard direct.
If anything else fails, I'll be at the bar.
