I think it is great that people who have 1 bass are happy and people that have several are happy. It is all about playing. I am all for that whether you are in a band or not. I am in a band and use 2 basses. One primarily and the other is there for back up purposes as I tend to be "energetic" on stage and bust strings and other things. ;)

Spend your money on bass or guitars...it beats crack. :p

well my 0.02......I have finally found my sound with the Bongos, so of course I need another one for a back-up in the band, and I have always loved 6-string basses so that makes 3. And the SR, well it was an awesome deal and it has its own killer tone. Different from the Bongo yet still killer.

I'm a bit of a tone freak, so having different choices in sound makes for some awesome bass lines.

I was always attracted to the bass. Hearing Ron Wood on bass at the Fillmore East while he was in the Jeff Beck Group did it for me. I can still hear and feel his thunder. No to mention Harvey Brooks, Jaco, John Paul Jones, John Entwhistle and my all time favorite Jack Bruce.

Not being a musician myself, I always had a bass on the wall as a piece of art.

Then I decided to get an amp and give it a go. Five years later I'm in a band situatuon with a few of the finest guiratists in Staten Island. Life is good.

So, to answer the question. I now have 16 basses. All different and all great. If I get one and its not extrodinary, I get rid of it. Am I rich? No. I sacrafise and make decisions. Vacation for big bucks, a memory or a new toy. I like the toy. But living in NYC is always like a avacation.

With all due respect you must have misunderstood my post. I am glorifying the one EBMM bass I've got and with that I am also singing praises to Ernie Ball for having made such a significant instrument. When I refer to those with many basses I have clearly said to you all, I take my hat to your choice and in no way that was an attack so my apologies to all those who thought it was offensive

To me one bass does it all, one woman only holds my heart, and one car takes me from a to b.

Aren't we supposed to be all differnet in our choices? Peace.

Point understood, captMoto, so let me answer the original q...

I have one kill-em-all Bongo 5 HH, one HS (soon to be HSP) Bongo 5 and one SR5. Those three are necessary to make the noises I want:) Then I have a slew of other basses that for one reason or another mean something to me. Some sound great, some sound like crap but have some other value to me, so I keep them.
To me it's in no way a search for tone or whatever, I can make my basses sound like mine, but I like diveristy.
As you said: Peace and merry christmas

I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food in my kitchen, and 2 Stingrays in my living room. When compared to the population of the world, I am a very wealthy and blessed man.

I probably think of mine more as children though. You can have as many as you want, they get better with age, and when a new one comes along, you love it just as much.

That's a great way to put it, i totally agree with that, very well said sir

Call me sick but I sort of like the wait for a new EBMM. When things are bad and it starts getting to me I will think about that new Sterling with the solid rosewood neck on order and all of the sudden things are good again. :D

Since I quit smoking I've saved $300 a month for 10 years. Strange that I only own a few MM basses. I woulda thought $36,000 would put me into at least 15 of them! The ones I own, I bought second-hand. So where did all that cash go!? :D

So yeah, it's about collecting for me as I'm not really a musician yet. But going forward I can't see being without at least my honeyburst SR4 and my Bongo '07 LE 4H. They are different looking and sounding in wonderful ways. Others come and go but these remain.

Just one is not enough to experience the joy of variety and nuance of sound and design.

EDIT: the SUB5FL was brand new and a great price.

I waited 10 years to buy my first Stingray. I used to drool at the selection of them in the local stores and even without playing them (as I'm a lefty), I knew that a Stingray5 was the only bass I wanted. So after a wedding, two kids, big mortgage and a huge career change came to be, I was finally in a financial situation where I could buy the bass i had dreamed about for so long. And once it arrived, I could not imagine wanting anything else...ever... unitil...

I walked into a store and there was a lefty 4 string ray sitting up on the wall. Oh mama! I sold pretty much every pice of gear I had kicking around and brought that baby home last year. So now I have a 4 and a 5 string ray and could not be happier..... except that i really want a fretless Bongo now! :)

So it starts with one, but its not hard to end up with a collection. I would be lying to myself (and my understanding wife) if I didn't admit that I plan to have a few more EBMM's before I'm done!
