At 11 am today the phone rang. It was the front man in my band. We had a gig opportunity fall into our lap.

The Croton Yacht club was having a Texas BBQ and pig roast, and the story was that the scheduled band could not make it. Their go-to backup band couldn't make it either, but one of the members of that band had seen us play a week ago and contacted us to see if we could bail him out.

Great opportunity, because once you get in the door at these places you're much more likely to get asked back. So we did the fire drill and headed over there.

I got there first and as I was entering the clubhouse I spotted the poster advertising the day's event. Turns out the originally scheduled entertainment was a country/bluegrass band.

So here I am, ready to play soul, funk, Motown and R&B.

Instant flashback to the Blues Brothers movie, where Jake and Elwood steal a gig at a roadhouse...the kind of place that likes "both kinds of music... country AND western". I was cracking up.

Gig was great. Best audience ever. We got re-hired on the spot for a Halloween gig.

That's great. I can just see it now. Congrats on the pull it out of the nether regions performance and the call back! Way to do it. :)

So did you guys play country/bluegrass at all or your standard fare?

Reminds of a gig we did on a road trip a few years ago. The club (claim to fame is that it has the longest bar in the Southern Hemisphere) billed us as "Sixties Rock and Roll" when in fact our website, business cards, bio, demo CD and flyers clearly said our band played "Sixties blues/rock" (ie. Cream, Yardbirds, Hendrix, The Animals, Spencer Davis etc).

When we were setting up we noticed that there were a couple of hundred people fully dressed in old time rock and roll costumes - turns out several rock and roll dancing clubs decided to travel to the club to make a big night of it. The look on their faces when we kicked off with Hendrix's "Fire" was priceless!

Fortunately, after 2 or 3 songs of the crowd exchanging WTFs and confused looks, most of them realised it didn't matter what we were playing, as long as it was 4/4, since they could do all their twist, jive and spinning moves to our songs as well. Turned out to be a great night!
