bands are temporary things at best, good luck with the next one.Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.Thankfully there's always a demand for experienced bass players and you always learn a little more when you play with new people.

so here's what happend to anyone that's wondering ...
i like punk rock and have some tendency to write heavier stuff if i write a song on the guitar. My influences range from Green Day and Rancid ("standard" punk) to more heavy punk like Thrice & Death By Stereo etc ... then actual metal like Slayer and Iron Maiden.

So our drummer is into stuff like the Postal Service etc (slower ... aka boring) and some experimental-ish stuff. Then our guitarist was into stuff like At the Drive In and other bands, that to me, are jsut frickin' noisey.

So the whole band was a comprimise ... no one was ever 100% happy and I always had to neuter the songs I wrote in order to have them get close to something the other dudes would dig. So I couldn't take it anymore ...

I did learn some stuff though ... its true, when you play with people with different tastes you learn new things. On our new stuff (never recorded) I played with my fingers & did some tapping in order to keep myself entertained & I ended up writing some bass lines that I never though i had in me. That's all fine and dandy ... but I miss the days where Id go through 5 picks in a 2 hour session :)

As you probably read I had a parting of the way with my band a few weeks back. I took it very easy for a couple of weeks and then a guy that I used to play bass for rang me - the word gets around - and asked me to do some dates. I'm gonna just see what happens but it's starting to look good.

Go and play what and how you want to play.

We all have a style as a bass player. Sometimes we play what we don't want to have to play but we do. Sounds to to me like I hear the Missouri song Moving on playing in the background here.

Good luck brother and you are a very good bass player.

thanks for all the kind words guys. tiz muck appreciated

im not too bummed about the situation ... ive seen it coming for a while now. A friend of mine has been hounding me for months to jam but the only issue is he's a bassist too. You never know ... i might have to dust off my Les Paul. I cant even imagine howd id feel about of letting someone else take care of the bass lines. But we are both on the same page as far as musical taste goes ... so we'll see.

These things happen. The only bad thing would be if you didnt allow yourself to learn from this experience. Keep playin. itll get better.

Don't give up the bass. There is a UK band called "Toupe" who are two basses and a drummer. Have a listen to their tracks.

Maybe you and your friend could start something similar, and somewhat unique, playing your kind of music.

Hi Phatduck....another vote to stick with the bass. I listened to your mp3s and you keep things moving. As I said earlier there is aways a call for a good bassplayer.I find that I play a little differently with each group of people I play with and have become a bit of a chameleon at this point.Play with as many people as you can.

Often times when you break away from one group, a better one comes along. it keeps you focused as to what music makes you happy, so you search it out and become a little more particular about joining a certain band. With your talent, you'll have alot of offers. But I say spend the time looking for a group of dudes that truly like your stuff. Then there is much less of a compromise. They have to be out there in a city the size of S.F. Good luck , man. You'll do great. Doug

'Heard NOFX is going to play with Dave Lombardo (or Paul Bostaph) on drums, and that fat Mike's unable to play for a couple of month... Sorry, just a joke.

I began to play in a punk-ska band, and our trumpet player was also found of jazz, like me. We made a side project with another drummer and a keyboard girl. That side project became our main band during 2 years and then splited of, because everyone wanted to explore other musical ways. We still are good friends and play sometimes together, to share what we learned.

For now on, I play in a friends rock band but it's not really what I want, so i'm lookin further for a band.

Hope you'll have the opportunity to express yourself again, you play great !

speaking of fat mike ... i have a (sortof) funny story about him. So I as at the Bottom of the Hill for a Lawrence Arms show with guys from a band i was in about 3 years ago (we were called Resident13). Well, I try and stay humble about my music but when I'm with our leader guitarist from that band (especially when we have a from drinks) we both let some of our ego come out and we we both tend to fuel the other's ego ...

so anyways ... some how someone started talking about someone needing a bassits and Ryan (my ex lead guitarist) was saying that "arin's the best bassist in this building". the person wasn't buying it so ryan kinda went off about it and I chimed in ... turns out Fat Mike is standing next to us and is listening to our rant. he then asks "so, youre the best bassits here huh?" ... im totally drunk and just shake my head and he walked away. ive seen him since and definately i get the feeling that he remembers that rant and isnt too fond of me. not my proudest moment ... cuz i like to be chill and humble ... but at least it makes for a funny story.
