Just been toolin' around on the AL after having a week away from it and loved the middle pickup position. Really, really nice sound.

There have been posts on here of late of guys modding their SSS to change the switching so that they get bridge and neck instead of the middle,( a la Telecast3r).

Is there a way to mod the switching to retain the middle pick up and also get the neck and bridge (without drilling any holes for additional switches).

Yes, *if* you don't mind adding a concentric (dual) pot or a push-pull pot in place of the regular tone pot. Then you could wire up a "blender" configuration which would add the neck or bridge pickup to any of the other positions. There's a lot of diagrams that show how to do this(mostly for strats but the wiring is exactly the same), here's one. The advantage to doing it this way is that you still get the middle pickup alone *and* you can also have all 3 pickups together - dunno if that's a useful position or not, but it's available.

There's also a lot of other easy mods at the site I linked to (including a diagram which shows how to add a pickup with a switch instead of a pot), most of which apply to the AL. Check 'em out. :)

I had my old homemade strat rigged up similar to that- a push/pull on the volume pot would activate the bridge pickup, add it to whatever was selected on the 5-way. That way you could have neck & bridge or all three.

But of course, it all depends how quickly you need to get that position- push/pulls aren't so great if you need em switched in and out quickly. A toggle is much quicker (like on the Morse), but of course it means drilling a small hole on your p/g.

On single coils, Middle/ Neck is my favorite, then Bridge/ Middle is a very, very close second.

+1 if we're just talking about combo positions. For me, I like neck only and middle/neck the most. Bridge/middle and bridge only next. This is based on my F-brand guitar. Not a big fan of the middle alone, but an EBMM might change that.

I must add that I'm not saying that the middle is my fav it's just that I like it and was looking to widen my options.
I'd really like to get the neck and bridge working together.
