Okay -- it's time ...
I have been noodling around with Bass for about a year. Learning scales, learning bass lines to songs, etc. Trying to work from books, the whole nine.
It ain't happening.
I need a real instructor -- someone who reads music (Which I do -- I used to play Trombone), understands theory, AND funk. Somebody who can help me get what's in my head into my hands and my bass.
I've worked with a couple of cats but their whole MO was "Play this scale" ... and then they launch off into some funky riff and say "oh, we'll get to that down the line."
I have no problem with learning scales but I don't need to pay money to hear somebody show off their chops on my time. I need someone who is serious about teaching and actually enjoys it -- as opposed to a bassist trying to make a few bucks on the side "showing me some things." (I don't have anything against working bassists who teach but in my experience, the best teachers enjoy teaching and enjoy their students learning.)
I'm not trying to become the next Marcus Miller but I need to learn how to PLAY the instrument and understand what I'm doing. My interests are primarily Urban Gospel and Old-school R&B.
Anybody know someone in the Minneapolis area?
Let me know.
