I reckon you lot are going to get dead sick of me soon and think that I'm a demanding old cow... but here goes!

Below is a pic of my current (really cheap but not too nasty!) bass. As you can see it has a rosewood neck, and I quite like the sound that I get from the neck - nice/warm/deep sound - not too sure how much that has to do with the neck as opposed to other things, but I am a bit thick by my own admission.

Anyway, I know that maple necks give a different sound to a rosewood one - bit snappier I understand, and for Jack to only ever buy rosewood necks (or so I've read!) means there must be some difference.

What I'd like, to aid in my decision of exactly what config of guitar to get (don't think I'll bother with a SUB now) is if possible, sound clips of basses that are otherwise identical, apart from their necks, so that I can hear the difference between the two. I'd go to my local store, but they only have them in the shop if you've ordered it, so I can't go and try them out. Plus, I don't want to spend over a grand on a guitar and not like the sound of the neck.

If you want to tell me to wassername off, I don't mind :D It'd just greatly help with my deciding what to get - unless of course I like both and then I have to buy TWO Sterlings...

OMG - I'm the only member on this forum right now... I feel so lonely :(

Cant help on the sound clips, I dont have 2 of any same bass. I find that rosewood necks tend to sound warmer than maple, although, its a very slight, hardly noticeable difference, so I go for maple as I prefer the look of them! Im sure some people will gladly record you some clips though!

The chance that someone has teh exact same basses, same strings, similiar string life on them, but different fingerboard woods, is highly unlikely, usually people get something different about the basses thats more significant. And if they are clips from 2 different people, the way they record probably will change the sound more than any wood can.
